Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Graduate student Ben Williams (Scarborough, Ontario) scored twice in the first nine minutes as No. 14/16 Babson College went on to defeat visiting Bridgewater State University, 5-0, in non-conference men's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
With its fourth straight win, Babson improves to 12-3-2 overall. Bridgewater State had its three-game winning streak snapped and is now 5-8-2 on the year.
Seniors Liam Hanlon (Boxborough, Mass.) and Noah Labelle (Bradenton, Fla.) and junior Shamar Rainford (Randolph, Mass.) each scored once for the Beavers. Graduate student Ryan Goss (Glastonbury, Conn.), senior Samuel Smith (Farmington, Maine) and junior Louis Gazo (Colchester, Vt.) all chipped in with an assist, while classmate Mack Lemkau (Bedford, N.Y.) made one save over the final 45 minutes after replacing sophomore Walker White (Coral Gables, Fla.) at halftime.
Junior goalkeeper Lukas Ekmanis (Baxter, Tenn.) was superb in defeat for the Beavers making 10 first-half saves.
Williams opened the scoring in the sixth minute when he gained possession of the ball at the top of the box following a failed clearance by a Bridgewater State defender and drilled his finish under the crossbar to give the Green and White a 1-0 lead. He doubled the advantage less than three minutes later when he settled Gazo's cross from the right wing and beat Ekmanis with a shot inside the left post for his team-leading ninth goal.
Hanlon extended the Beavers' lead to 3-0 in the 23rd minute when he headed Goss' corner kick back off the inside of the right post for his first goal of the season. Babson was awarded an indirect kick just outside the six-yard box in the 42nd minute and Smith played it quickly to his right for Labelle, who beat the sprawling Ekmanis for his first marker of the year to make it 4-0.
Rainford capped the scoring just over a minute later when he settled a service into the box and spun back to his right before perfectly placing his finish inside the right post for his fifth goal with 2:09 to go before halftime.
Ekmanis made a number of terrific saves to keep the Bears in the game ove the opening 45 minutes. He came sliding off his line to deny Gazo in the 14th minute and laid out to push junior Samuel Kalishman's (Clarksville, Md.) rocket from 25 yards that was headed for the upper right corner out of danger
Ekmanis dropped down to deny senior Eamon Keenan's (East Greenwich, R.I.) header off a corner kick in the 30th minute and got a piece of sophomore Patrick Demaso's (Easton, Conn.) blast from distance following another corner in the 39th minute.
The Beavers finished with a 22-5 edge in shots and attempted all 14 corner kicks in the match.
Both sides conclude the regular season on Saturday as Babson hosts Springfield at 1 p.m., while Bridgewater State entertains MCLA at 12 p.m.
