Box Score MANSFIELD, Conn.—Junior Louis Gazo (Colchester, Vt.) scored the only goal of the match in the 77th minute as No. 18/22 Babson College defeated Eastern Connecticut State University, 1-0, in non-conference men's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Rick McCarthy Field.
With its second consecutive win, Babson improves to 10-3-2 overall, while Eastern Connecticut sees its record drop to 8-5-2 on the year.
Seniors RJ Parrilla (Pawcatuck, Conn.) and Mitchell Collins (Burlington, Mass.) both recorded an assist and sophomore goalkeeper Walker White (Coral Gables, Fla.) made four saves to record his fourth clean sheet of the season for the Beavers.
Junior Dylan Pallanck (Willington, Conn.) made five saves in 80 minutes of action after replacing sophomore Nathan Yeich (Willington, Conn.), who suffered an injury after making a pair of stops early in the match for the Warriors.
In a match that featured a number of chances for both sides, Gazo broke the scoreless deadlock with his fifth goal of the year with 13:31 remaining. After winning the ball back 30 yards from goal he took a pass down the right sideline from Parrilla and drilled a shot that sailed over Pallanck's head and inside the back post.
White came off his line to make a tremendous save to deny senior Larson Richards' (Mansfield, Conn.) bid to open the scoring off a service by sophomore Logan Brennan (Farmington, Conn.) in the 61st minute, and Eastern Connecticut State appeared to go in front in the 68th minute only to have first-year Anton Smith's (Plymouth, N.H.) goal waved off when the official ruled he fouled Beavers' senior Eamon Keenan (East Greenwich, R.I.) prior to his finish.
Gazo had his volley by Pallanck smothered in the 15th minute and senior Ryan Grund (Princeton Junction, N.J.) had his shot from the corner of the six-yard box cleared away by a Warriors' defender in the 21st minute. Eastern Connecticut State senior Ryan Sirois (Tolland, Conn.) also missed a golden opportunity to get the hosts on the board when his shot from the penalty spot rolled just wide of the left post in the 24th minute.
The Beavers finished with a 21-7 advantage and shots and held a slim 4-3 edge in corners.
Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson travels to MIT at 4 p.m., while Eastern Connecticut State hosts Plymouth State at 1 p.m.
