Box Score WORCESTER, Mass.—Senior Mitchell Collins (Burlington, Mass.) scored once in each half as No. 15/19 Babson College defeated WPI, 3-1, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.
With the win, Babson improves to 9-3-2 overall and stays perfect in league play at 5-0-0. WPI sees its record drop to 5-4-4 overall and 1-2-2 in the NEWMAC.
Junior Louis Gazo (Colchester, Vt.) finished with a goal and an assist, while classmate Ryan Kim (San Ramon, Calif.) and first-year Joao Araujo (Boca Raton, Fla.) both picked up assists in the win for the Beavers. Sophomore goalkeeper Walker White (Coral Gables, Fla.) made five saves to earn his ninth victory of the year.
Sophomore Filippo Marcantoni (Ponti sul Mincio, Italy) scored his third goal of the year and classmate Matthew McLellan (Hopedale, Mass.) recorded an assist for the Engineers, who got two saves from senior Roe Hendrick (Nashua, N.H.).
Collins gave the Green and White the lead in the 11th minute when he ran onto a long pass by Araujo and buried a low show past the charging Hendrick from the right side of the box. The Beavers doubled their advantage in the 31st minute when Gazo touched home a loose ball inside the six-yard box after Hendrick bobbled Kim's free kick from the left wing.
WPI cut its deficit in half less than five minutes later though on Marcantoni's fourth marker of the season. McLellan played a through ball into the right side of the box and Marcantoni slipped it past the diving White to make it 2-1.
Babson senior Eamon Keenan (East Greenwich, R.I.) cleared a restart by McLellan out of danger in the 62nd minute and Collins tacked on an insurance tally with 11:29 remaining in the match when he curled a left-footed free kick over the wall and inside the right post from the edge of the box for his third goal of the season. White helped preserve the two-goal margin with his best save of the day less than a minute later as he stepped up off his line to push away a 25-yard blast by Engineers' junior Aaron Vaz (Medford, Mass.).
WPI finished with a 19-8 edge in shots and both teams attempted four corner kicks in the contest.
Both sides return to action on Tuesday as Babson travels to Eastern Connecticut State at 3 p.m., while the Engineers take on Middlebury at 7 p.m.
