Box Score 2 BABSON PARK, Mass.—No. 19 Babson College hit .275 as a team and totaled 27 service aces on the way to recording three-set sweeps of visiting Clark University and Gordon College on Saturday afternoon inside Staake Gymnasium.
The Beavers cruised past the Cougars 25-19, 25-13, 25-10 in their opening match of the day and followed it up with a 28-26, 25-18, 25-13 triumph over the Fighting Scots to improve to 15-1 overall and 6-0 in the NEWMAC.
Babson 3, Clark 0
Junior Lauren Gips (Orlando, Fla.) led all players with nine kills while hitting at a .692 clip and senior Martina Jankovic Chin (Zapresic, Croatia) added six kills in 10 swings without an error for the Beavers. Graduate student Izzy Sebold dished out 21 assists over the first two sets and senior Jordan Lapins (Calgary, Alberta) added five kills and a team-high eight digs in the win.
Senior Claudia Rivera (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) finished with four kills and Marimo Oka (Fukuoka, Japan) added a match-high 11 digs for Clark (9-7, 3-2 NEWMAC).
The opening set featured six ties and a pair of lead changes before the Green and White seized control with a 12-3 run. The hosts got three straight points on the serve of sophomore Tatum Stelter (Glendale, Ariz.), aces from senior Laura Zuloaga (Naples, Fla.) and junior Olivia Leinenweber (Neptune Beach, Fla.) and two kills apiece from Gips, Lapins and first-year Isabella Allen (Williamsville, N.Y.) to forge a 21-14 lead that it would not relinquish.
Jankovic Chin recorded five quick kills and junior Lauren Griffin (Los Altos Hills, Calif.) served up a pair of aces to help Babson jump out to a 16-5 lead in game two. The Beavers recorded 12 kills without an error and hit .522 in the frame to grab a commanding 2-0 advantage.
Zuloaga and junior Erin Gray (Oakland, Calif.) both had two kills and first-year Sophia Shaw (Novato, Calif.) added back-to-back aces to help the Green and White race out to a 7-1 advantage in the third. The hosts pushed the margin to 14-3 on another kill by Zuloaga and limited the Cougars to just two kills in the game on the way to closing out the match.
Babson 3, Gordon 0
Gips tied for match-high honors with eight kills and added four aces and four blocks, Lapins contributed six kills, and Griffin and Gray finished with five kills apiece to pace a balanced attack for the Beavers. Shaw and Stelter had four aces apiece and Seebold led all players with 28 assists in the victory.
Senior Valerie Nilan (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) recorded eight kills and four blocks, sophomore Joey Keltner (Anacortes, Wash.) added seven kills and classmate Annie Murphy (Wenham, Mass.) chipped in with five kills and a match-high six blocks to lead the Fighting Scots (7-9). Senior Emily Schneider (Sutton, Mass.) had four aces in the loss.
The Green and White scored four straight points on the serve of Gips to open a 21-15 lead in game one only to see Gordon respond with a 6-0 run that included a pair of blocks from Murphy to pull even. The teams traded 10 consecutive points before the Beavers used a kill by Lapins and a setting error on the visitors to scratch out a one-set advantage.
Leading 12-11 in game two, Babson got three kills from Lapins in the span of six points to extend the margin to 18-11. The Scots got within four on three occasions, the last coming at 22-18 before Gray put away a pair of kills to help close out the set.
The Beavers never trailed in the third and finished out the match on a 13-3 run. The hosts scored five straight points on the serve of Leinenweber to go up 18-11 and got three aces from Stelter and two kills and a block from Gray as part of a closing 6-0 spurt.
Babson returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Emerson at 7 p.m.
MATCH NOTES
• The Beavers are now 17-20 all-time against Clark and 5-4 versus Gordon.
• Babson's 14-match winning streak is the second longest in Division III behind only No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, which is the only team to defeat the Green and White this season.
• The Beavers are now 10-0 on the year when recording double-digit service aces.
• The Green and White has hit .200 or better in six consecutive matches going back to September 23.
