No. 9 Men's Ice Hockey uses third-period rally to edge Amherst, 3-2

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Graduate student Paul Boutoussov (Dana Point, Calif.) and senior Hunter Garlasco (Mahwah, N.J.) scored back-to-back goals midway through the third period and that proved to be the difference Tuesday evening as No. 9 Babson College came from behind to defeat Amherst College, 3-2, in non-conference men's ice hockey action inside the Babson Skating Center.

With the win, Babson won its second straight game to improve to 11-4-2 overall while Amherst had a five-game unbeaten streak stopped and dropped to 6-7-2.

Boutoussov finished with a goal and an assist and senior Matt Wiesner (Newport Beach, Calif.) scored a power play goal for the Beavers. Seniors Cam Schmitt (Andover, Mass.), Cole Sanderson (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Max Torrez (Framingham, Mass.) and junior Chris Rooney (Milton, Mass.) all collected one assist, and graduate student Brad Arvanitis (Holliston, Mass.) picked up the win in goal after making 22 saves.

Senior Matteo Mangiardi (Grayslake, Ill.) and Pieter von Steinbergs (Brea, Calif.) scored goals for Amherst, both on the power play, and senior Sean Wrenn (Charlestown, Mass.) and junior Connor Merrill (Brentwood, Tenn.) registered assists. Junior Dan Dachille (Saddle River, N.J.) was solid goal for the Mammoths with 36 saves in the tough-luck loss.

The teams traded power play goals in the first period. Schmitt capitalized on an Amherst turnover at the blue line and found Boutoussov at the half wall, who fed Weisner in front of the net to bury his eighth goal of the year at 4:11. Amherst tied it as Wrenn sent a wrist shot from the point and Mangiardi deflected it into the top right corner past Arvanitis at 6:39.

Babson had a 16-9 advantage in the second period but the Mammoths scored the only goal with the man advantage in the final minute of the stanza. Following a string of saves by Arvanitis, a failed clear attempt found the stick of Von Steinbergs at the point who sent one past Arvanitis for a 2-1 Mammoth lead heading into the third.

The Green and White tied it up six minutes into the third period as Boutoussov gained the blue line on the left side and centered a pass to Sanderson in the middle before Boutoussov followed up with a backhander to tie the score. Three minutes later Garlasco made a nifty move past a defenseman at the blue line and went in alone on Dachille and slid in the eventual game-winner between the pads at 9:15.

Babson finished with a 39-24 advantage in shots. Amherst went 2-for-3 on the power play and the Beavers converted their only opportunity with the man advantage.

The Beavers hit the road for their final NEHC road weekend of the season as they travel to face Skidmore on Friday and Castleton on Saturday. Amherst returns home for a NESCAC weekend series against Trinity on Friday and Wesleyan on Saturday.
