Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Chris Peters (Fairport, N.Y.) scored the go-ahead goal at 19:10 of the third period to lift visiting UMass Boston to a 5-4 win over No. 5 Babson College in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action on Friday night inside the Babson Skating Center.
Babson, which had its 10-game home unbeaten streak snapped, drops to 9-4-2 overall and 5-4-2 in league play. UMass Boston improves to 11-6-1 overall and 7-3-1 in the NEHC.
Senior Ryan Black (Pomfret, Conn.) scored twice and classmate Cole Sanderson (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and junior Chris Rooney (Milton, Mass.) both added a goal for the Beavers. Seniors Ryan Campbell (Scituate, Mass.) and Mike Egan (Billerica, Mass.) and sophomore Colby Bailey (Southborough, Mass.) recorded two assists apiece as seven different players produced a point in the loss.
Graduate student Brad Arvanitis (Holliston, Mass.) stopped 19 shots in 32 minutes, while junior Nolan Hildebrand (Penticton, British Columbia) made 14 saves on 15 shots in relief for Babson.
Peters finished with two goals and one assist for three points, while senior Jeffrey Skinner (Katy, Texas), sophomore Corey Clifton (Matawan, N.J.) and first-year Devin Moran (Leominster, Mass.) each scored once for the Beacons. Senior Ethan Nitkin (Miami Beach, Fla.) recorded two assists and junior goaltender Sam Best (Woburn, Mass.) stopped 19 shots between the pipes.
Sanderson put the Green and White on top with his first goal of the season at 18:40 of the first period with a blast through traffic from the blue line. UMass Boston killed off a minor to start the second and pulled even on Clifton's tally just 3:50 into the stanza.
The Beacons took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play to go in front 2-1 when Peters ripped a shot past Arvanitis from the left face-off circle at 7:04, and extended their margin to 3-1 on Skinner's eighth goal of the season following a defensive-zone miscue at the 10:28 mark.
Black answered back with a power play tally off a cross-ice feed from Corrigan just 42 seconds later to make it 3-2 before UMass Boston regained a two-goal lead on Moran's wrist shot from the left circle in transition at 12:19. Babson responded by immediately killing off a tripping penalty and then scored twice over the final 94 seconds of the stanza to tie the game. Black beat Best from the left circle for his second goal at 18:26 and Rooney buried a feed from Campbell at 19:36.
The visitors held a 10-8 edge in third-period shots and Peters scored the decisive goal with just 50 seconds remaining as he gained the zone and fired a shot over the right shoulder from the top of the right circle for the decisive goal.
The Beacons outshot the Beavers 38-23 and both teams scored once on the power play.
Both teams return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. as Babson hosts Johnson & Wales while UMass Boston travels to Southern Maine.
