Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. — Babson College had 11 players in the scoring column and outscored the home team 22-5 in the third quarter Wednesday evening, rolling to a 76-40 victory over Clark University in the first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's basketball game this season inside Kneller Gymnasium.
With the win, Babson stopped a two-game losing skid and improved to 10-4 overall and 1-0 in the NEWMAC while Clark dropped its third game in a row to fall to 6-8 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Junior Samantha Smith (Greenfield, Mass.) led the Beavers with 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting, while classmate Megan Bauman (East Lyme, Conn.) added 12 points, four rebounds and four assists. Babson got strong bench play as first-year Camilla Silk (Medfield, Mass.) contributed 12 points (on 5-of-6 shooting), seven rebounds and three steals, classmate Anika Chinthakunta (Saratoga, Calif.) was good for 10 points (on 4-of-8 shooting), and sophomore Nihanika Noel (Southborough, Mass.) collected nine points and a career-high nine rebounds in the victory.
Senior Emily Sifferlen (North Andover, Mass.) topped the Cougars with 12 points, while graduate student Hannah Favaloro (Blackstone, Mass.) finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 10 points and nine boards.
Babson jumped out to an early 9-2 lead, sparked by an early three-pointer by sophomore Kelly Walsh (Goffstown, N.H.). The Beavers held a 14-7 lead after one quarter, with all five starters getting into the scoring act with at least two points, while Sifferlen had a team-high four points for Clark.
The Green and White started the second quarter with an 8-2 run, including layup by Silk and a pair of threes by Bauman, to open up a 12-point margin, 19-7. Smith made it a 13-point lead (26-13) with a basket at the midway point of the quarter, and the Beavers went on an 11-3 surge over the next four minutes to build their largest lead of the half at 21 points (37-16) in the final minute. Favaloro converted a traditional three-point play for Clark to make it a 37-19 Babson margin at the break.
The Beavers scored the first six points of the third quarter and kept the Cougars off the scoreboard for the first four minutes until a Zambrano jumper cut the margin to 43-21. Babson rattled off 14 points in a row, including points from six different players, to push the lead to 34 points (57-21). Sifferlen stopped the bleeding for Clark but not before Babson had built a 59-24 lead after three quarters. Clark got no closer than 30 points the rest of the way.
Babson shot 44.9 percent as a team (31-of-69) while holding the home team to 22.2 percent from the field (12-of-54) and 18.2 percent from three-point range (4-of-22). The Beavers owned the boards, posting a 51-32 advantage, including 17 off the offensive glass.
The Beavers are on the road again on Saturday with a visit to Coast Guard for a NEWMAC match-up at 1 p.m. Clark hits the road Saturday for a NEWMAC clash at Smith, beginning at 2 p.m.
