WHAT TO KNOW
• The Babson men's and women's alpine ski teams head to Lake Placid, N.Y., for two days of giant slalom races at Whiteface Mountain beginning Friday morning.
• Whiteface will host the 2022 USCSA National Championships in March.
LAST TIME AT WHITEFACE
• The Babson women came in fourth and the men finished 12th in the slalom at the USCSA National Championships at Whiteface Mountain on March 12, 2020.
• Jack Blanchard '20 and junior Jack Beney finished seventh and 17th, respectively, for the Beaver men, while current assistant coach Sarah Mangiacotti '21 placed eighth for the women's squad.
• The Babson women came in fourth overall at nationals to match the best finish in program history, while the men placed seventh in the combined standings.
SCOUTING THE BABSON WOMEN
• The Beavers recorded back-to-back runner-up finishes in the slalom at Proctor Ski Area to kick off the 2022 MacConnell Division schedule on January 14-15.
• Sophomore Caroline Haaijer followed up a fourth-place showing in her collegiate debut by posting a 1.11-second victory in Saturday's race.
• Junior Lauren Abdow came in second in Friday's race, first-year Amelie Alkier placed ninth in Saturday's competition, and senior Julia Martin recorded a pair of top-20 results on opening weekend.
• Going back to the start of the 2019-20 campaign, Babson has six runner-up finishes to along with two victories in 12 MacConnell Division races.
SCOUTING THE BABSON MEN
• The Green and White had three skiers record consecutive top-10 finishes on the way to placing second in the team standings in both slalom races at Proctor last weekend.
• Sophomore Kyle Wolff placed seventh in his collegiate debut last Friday before posting a fifth-place finish on Saturday, while classmate Ryan Beardsley came in eighth and sixth in his first college action.
• First-year Zach Carpenter backed up a 10th-place result on Friday by finishing sixth on Saturday, and senior Victor Wiacek took top honors for the Beavers on Friday with his sixth-place showing.
• Babson has now finished no worse than third in MacConnell Division competition in 13 straight races going back to the end of the 2018-19 season.
SUCCESS IN LAKE PLACID
• Wiacek has recorded a pair of fourth-place finishes in four GS races at Whiteface since 2019, while Beney placed 11th, seventh and 16th in the his three giant slalom events there in 2020.
• Martin came in 11th and 12th in the GS at Whiteface during the 2020 regular season and finished 31st there in the slalom during the USCSA National Championships.
WINNER'S CIRCLE
• Haaijer's victory in Saturday's women's slalom was the first by a Babson female since Mangiacotti took first place at in the GS at Whiteface Mountain on January 27, 2019.
LOOKING AHEAD
• The Beavers will travel to New Hampshire to race in the slalom at Pat's Peak in Henniker on January 29 and the GS at Mount Sunapee in Newbury on January 30.
