No. 6 Men's Ice Hockey Knocks Off No. 5 Hobart, 5-3

Box Score

GENEVA, N.Y.—Graduate student Paul Boutoussov (Dana Point, Calif.) and senior Matt Wiesner (Newport Beach, Calif.) each had a goal and finished with three points apiece to help sixth-ranked Babson College defeat No. 5 Hobart College, 5-3, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action on Sunday afternoon inside The Cooler.

With the win, Babson improves to 9-2-2 overall and 5-2-2 in league play. Hobart, which had its three-game winning streak halted, is now 11-3-1 overall and 7-1-1 in the NEHC.

Junior James Perullo (Revere, Mass.) and first-year Wyatt George (Mount Lebanon, Pa.) both recorded a goal and an assist and senior Ryan Black (Pomfret, Conn.) scored once for the Beavers. Classmate Mike Egan (Billerica, Mass.) dished out two assists, while fellow senior John Corrigan (Stoneham, Mass.) and sophomore Thomas Kramer (Bridgewater, Mass.) each chipped in with a helper.

Graduate student Brad Arvanitis (Holliston, Mass.) made 36 saves to improve to 5-1-2 on the year for Babson.

Senior Chase Bell (Lethbridge, Alberta) and sophomores Jonah Alexander (Toronto, Ontario) and Artem Buzoverya (Kharkiv, Ukraine) all scored for the Statesmen, who got a combined 26 saves from seniors Joe Halstrom (Fort Collins, Colo.) and Liam Lascelle (Cornwall, Ontario).

The Green and White took advantage of its first power play to grab a 1-0 lead when Wiesner tipped Perullo's shot from the point past Halstrom 8:56 into the first period. Hobart pulled even just under two minutes later though as Alexander flipped a backhand shot past Arvanitis from down low along the goal line for his fourth goal of the season.

Black put the Beavers back in front at the 16:19 mark when he jammed home his own rebound after Halstrom had made back-to-back saves. The Statesmen tied the game just 1:54 into the second when Bell scored off a centering pass from first-year Matthew Iasenza (Montreal, Quebec) only to see Babson regain a 3-2 lead on Perullo's shot through traffic from the left point after Egan gloved down an errant clearing pass.

Buzoverya pounced on a rebound following an offensive zone face-off to make it 3-3 at the 7:24 mark, but the Beavers responded with a pair of goals less than four minutes apart to take the lead for good. George drove the net and finished off a centering pass from Boutoussov after winning a defensive zone face-off to take a 4-3 advantage at 10:52, and Boutoussov tucked in a rebound on the power play for a two-goal cushion at the 14:47 mark.

Arvanitis stopped all 11 shots he faced in the third period and the Green and White killed off a pair of penalties, including a 6-on-4 advantage for the final 1:49 after Hobart pulled Lascelle.

Babson returns to action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when it travels to New England College, while the Statesman take on SUNY Potsdam on Monday at 7 p.m.
