No. 19 Men's Soccer Edges Wheaton in NEWMAC Opener, 1-0

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Giancarlo Arguello (Key Biscayne, Fla.) broke a scoreless deadlock with his first career goal in the 66th minute to lift No. 19 Babson College to a 1-0 win over visiting Wheaton College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

With its third straight victory, Babson improves to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. Wheaton, which had its four-game winning streak snapped, slips to 4-2 overall and 0-1 in the NEWMAC.

The only goal of the match came just over 20 minutes into the second half following a corner kick by senior Mitchell Collins (Burlington, Mass.). A Lyons' defender headed the initial ball but his clearance attempt didn't make it out of the box and Arguello sent a looping header over the head of Wheaton senior goalkeeper Diego Medina (Yonkers, N.Y.) from 12 yards to give the Beavers the lead.

The goal was more than enough for a stout Babson defense that held the Lyons without a shot on goal in the match. Wheaton's best chance to equalize came in the 88th minute but senior Charlie Stringer (Medford, Ore.) sent his sliding shot well over the bar.

The Green and White nearly took the lead in the 47th minute only to see sophomore Samuel Kalishman (Clarksville, Md.) hit his first touch just wide of the right post off a feed from senior Ben Cawood (Santa Rosa, Calif.). First-year Matthew Thompson (Medfield, Mass.) forced a diving save from Medina in the 65th minute for the corner kick that led to Arguello's marker.

Senior Itai Rubin (Briarcliff, N.Y.) did not have to make a save to earn his third clean sheet in six starts for Babson, while his counterpart Medina stopped three shots for the Lyons.

The Beavers finished with a 14-4 edge in shots and attempted all four corner kicks in the match.

Babson returns to action on Sunday when it travels to Williams at 2 p.m., while Wheaton visits Brandeis on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
