Men's Soccer Tops Dean in Season Opener, 2-0

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore Liam Rhatigan (Holderness, N.H.) finished with a goal and an assist to help Babson College defeat visiting Dean College, 2-0, in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

With the win, Babson opens the season at 1-0 while Dean starts 0-1.

Senior Ryan Goss (Glastonbury, Conn.) recorded his first career goal and junior Jack Dugan (Haddonfield, N.J.) and sophomore Joseph Cardaropoli (Longmeadow, Mass.) each recorded an assist for the Beavers. Senior Itai Rubin (Briarcliff, N.Y.), who was making the first start of his career, did not have to make a save to keep his first clean sheet.

Senior Bryce Antoch (Cranston, R.I.) was superb for the Bulldogs and finished with 12 saves in the loss.

Antoch made five saves over the first 13 minutes of the match before Rhatigan put Babson in front in the 17th minute. He settled Cardarapoli's service from the right flank and took two touches middle before curling a shot inside the right post from the top of the box for his first collegiate marker.

The Beavers had a number of chances to extend their advantage before finally breaking through for an insurance tally in the 75th minute. Rhatigan and Dugan worked a give-and-go down the right side to set up Goss, who snapped a header past Antoch to make it 2-0.

Held without a shot on target in the match, Dean nearly pulled even nine minutes into the second half but sophomore Kazu Noguchi (Hyogo, Japan) was called offside prior to having his sliding shot denied by Rubin. Antoch made seven of his 12 stops in the first half, which included a diving save on Babson senior Giancarlo Arguelo's (Key Biscayne, Fla.) 25-yard blast in the 10th minute and a quick-reaction stop on Dugan following a throw in just over 11 minutes into the contest.

The Beavers outshot Dean 32-5 and attempted three of the four corner kicks in the match.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson travels to Widener at 5 p.m., while the Bulldogs face Lesley at 3:30 p.m.
