Men's Ice Hockey Holds Off Plymouth State in Series Opener, 6-5

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore James Perullo (Revere, Mass.) scored his first career goal at 18:05 of the third period to lift Babson College to a 6-5 win over visiting Plymouth State University in men's college ice hockey action on Friday night inside the Babson Skating Center.

With the victory, Babson improves to 5-0 on the year, while Plymouth State slips to 2-1 overall.

Junior Ryan Black (Pomfret, Conn.) finished with two goals and one assist and senior Nick Rosa (Birmingham, Mich.) scored once and assisted on two other goals for three points to lead the Beavers. Junior John Corrigan (Stoneham, Mass.) contributed a goal and an assist, sophomore Andrew Holland (Winchester, Mass.) scored once and the trio of senior Brendan Casey (Glastonbury, Conn.) and juniors Mike Egan (Billerica, Mass.) and Cam Schmitt (Andover, Mass.) all chipped in with two assists apiece.

Senior goaltender Brad Arvanitis (Holliston, Mass.) stopped a season-high 41 shots to win his fourth consecutive start.

First-year Anton Nasstrom (Omskoldsvik, Sweden) had two goals, while senior Jake Gerbner (Havertown, Pa.) and sophomore Myles Abbate (Norwell, Mass.) each recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Panthers. Senior Peter Laviolette (Nashville, Tenn.) led all players with three assists and sophomore netminder Brendahn Bawley (Morton, Pa.) made 31 saves in a losing effort.

Plymouth State struck first as Gerbner forced a turnover at the blue line and cleaned up the rebound of a shot by Laviolette for a 1-0 less than two minutes into the contest. Babson pulled even on Corrigan's third goal of the year at the 4:11 mark and Rosa put the hosts in front when he redirected Corrigan's feed from the right point for a power play goal at 10:17.

Black put away a feed from Rosa after Egan forced a turnover behind the net to extended the Beavers' advantage to 3-1 at 16:41 of the first, but the Panthers responded with two goals 65 seconds apart to pull even early in the second period. Nasstrom recorded his first collegiate goal to make it 3-2 and Abbate snapped a shot from the point past Arvanitis to tie the game at the 6:55 mark.

Black beat two defenders before scoring his second goal of the game three minutes later and Holland pushed the lead to 5-3 when he buried the rebound of a shot by Schmitt from the right point 25 seconds later. Nasstrom redirected junior Simon Besner's (North Lancaster, Ontario) blast from the blue line for his second goal at 17:11 of the middle period, and Plymouth State's offensive pressure paid off when junior Michael McPherson (Somerville, Mass.) tied the game with 4:55 to go in regulation.

Perullo broke the deadlock with a blast from the point and the Babson defense held the Panthers without a shot despite their two-man advantage over the final 1:18 to close out the win.

Plymouth State finished with a 46-37 edge in shots, which included an 18-11 advantage over the final 20 minutes.

The teams will conclude their two-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Plymouth, N.H.
