Box Score Murphy Records Second Career Shutout as Beavers Improve to 7-0
BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Mike Egan (Billerica, Mass.) finished with two goals, classmate Aidan Murphy (Walpole, Mass.) made 24 saves and Babson College erupted for six second-period goals on the way to defeating visiting New England College, 7-0, in college men's ice hockey action on Friday night inside the Babson Skating Center.
With the win, Babson improves to 7-0 on the year, while New England College had its three-game winning streak snapped and falls to 3-4.
Junior Ryan Black (Pomfret, Conn.) and sophomores James Perullo (Revere, Mass.) and Chris Rooney (Milton, Mass.) all recorded a goal and an assist, while senior Nick Rosa (Birmingham, Mich.) and junior Cam Schmitt (Andover, Mass.) produced three assists apiece for the Beavers. Junior Trevor Marcinick (Dublin, Ohio) and first-year Thomas Kramer (Bridgewater, Mass.) also scored in the victory.
Murphy, who was making his first start of the season, recorded his second career shutout and improved to 11-2-1 in 14 career starts for Babson.
Junior Spencer Kozlowski (Vancouver, British Columbia) made 22 saves over the first two periods before giving way to classmate Jack Maxwell (Wellesley, Mass.), who stopped eight of nine shots in the third period for the Pilgrims.
Following a scoreless opening period, the Green and White jumped on top just 1:54 into the second when Black carried the puck along the left boards and behind the net before finding Egan at the top of the crease for the first of his two goals. Marcinick added to the lead less than two minutes later when he jammed home the rebound of a shot by senior Cooper Norton (Williston, Vt.), and Egan scored again, this time off a feed from Rosa to make it 3-0 at the 10:07 mark.
Perullo drove the net and made it 4-0 with his second goal of the year at 13:21 and Black followed with his team-leading eighth tally for a five-goal advantage with 2:23 to go in the period. Kramer capped the barrage when he finished off a pass from Rooney just 35 seconds later to send the hosts into the locker room up 6-0.
Rooney redirected a blast by Schmitt from the right point at 12:12 of the third and Murphy stopped 10 shots over the final 20 minutes to secure the shutout.
Babson will conclude the 2020-21 season on Saturday when it travels to Henniker, N.H., for the series finale against New England College at 4 p.m.
