Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.— Senior Ryan Black (Pomfret, Conn.) scored a power play goal at 10:15 of the third period to tie the score and No. 11 Babson College went on to a 2-2 overtime deadlock against No. 5 Hobart College in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's ice hockey action on Saturday afternoon inside the Babson Skating Center.
With the outcome, Babson is now 2-0-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in the NEHC, while Hobart is now 3-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in league games.
Black finished off a five-point weekend after collecting two goals and two assists in Friday night's win over No. 13 Elmira College, and Egan finished with two goals and an assist on the weekend. Junior Chris Rooney (Milton, Mass.) also scored for the Beavers against Hobart, and senior Mike Egan (Billerica, Mass.) picked up an assist. Graduate student Brad Arvanitis (Holliston, Mass.) made 26 saves in goal for the Beavers in the draw.
Senior PA Martineau (Sherbrooke, Que.) and junior Brenden Howell (Hilton, N.Y.) tallied goals for the Statesmen, and first-year Matthew Iasenza and senior Marek Benemerito (Landing, N.J.) registered one assist each. Senior Joe Halstrom (Fort Collins, Colo.) made 32 saves in goal for the visitors.
Hobart jumped on top just 5:24 into the first period when Martineau found the back of the net with an assist from Lasenza. Rooney answered for Babson with an unassisted marker at the 12:10 mark to even the score at 1-all. Babson had a 16-11 shot advantage in the period which ended at 1-1.
Babson had a 14-10 advantage in shots in the second period, but the only goal was scored by Howell at the 3:28 mark, giving the Statesmen a 2-1 advantage.
The lead lasted until Black put home the tying goal with a man-advantage with 9:45 remaining on the third-period clock, with an assist from Egan. Neither team was able to find the net for the remaining time in regulation or during the five-minute overtime. Hobart managed the only shot for either team during the extra session.
Babson finished with a 34-28 advantage in shots. The Beavers went 1-for-3 on the power play while Hobart came up empty on three opportunities with the man advantage.
Both teams are back in action next Friday night as Babson plays Johnson & Wales in an NEHC matchup in Attleboro, Mass., and Hobart visits Buffalo State for a non-conference tilt.
