Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Ryan Black (Pomfret, Conn.) had a four-point night with two goals and two assists and classmate Mike Egan (Billerica, Mass.) scored twice to help No. 11 Babson College defeat 13th-ranked Elmira College, 6-3, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's ice hockey action on Friday night inside the Babson Skating Center.
With the win, Babson improves to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in league play, while Elmira slips to 2-1 and 0-1 in NEHC play.
Senior Matt Wiesner (Newport Beach, Calif.) and first-year Wyatt George (Mount Lebanon, Pa.) each scored once, while sophomore Thomas Kramer (Bridgewater, Mass.) chipped in with two assists for the Beavers. Seniors Ryan Campbell (Scituate, Mass.), Cole Sanderson (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and John Corrigan (Stoneham, Mass.) each finished with one assist and graduate student Brad Arvanitis (Holliston, Mass.) stopped 37 shots to pick up his second victory of the year.
Sophomore Chance Gorman (Clinton, N.J.) recorded a goal and an assist and classmates Shawn Kennedy (Bainsville, Ontario) and Janis Vizbelis (Riga, Latvia) each scored once for the Soaring Eagles. Graduate student Chris Janzen (Pelham, Ontario) made 24 saves in just over two periods of action in the loss.
Egan opened the scoring at 15:25 of the first period and tacked on his second goal less than three minutes later to give the Green and White a 2-0 lead entering the first intermission. The Beavers got outshot 19-9 in the second but stretched its lead to 4-0 thanks to goals just 1:51 apart by Wiesner and Black.
Wiesner beat Janzen short side from the right face-off circle at the 9:46 mark and Black followed with a blast from the slot on the power play for the first of his two goals at 11:55. The Soaring Eagles got on the board at 15:06 of the second when Kennedy scored on the power play and got as close as 4-2 on Gorman's tally just 2:03 into the third.
The momentum was short-lived, however, as George picked up his second goal of the season just 25 seconds later to make it 5-2, and Black buried a feed from Kramer less than a minute after that as Babson matched its biggest advantage of the night at 6-2 just over three minutes into the third period.
The Beavers, who were outshot 40-39 on the night, went 1-for-2 on the power play. Elmira finished 1-for-3 on the power play in the loss.
Both teams return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. as Babson hosts fifth-ranked Hobart, while Elmira travels to Southern Maine.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are 5-5-0 all-time against Elmira and Friday's contest was the first between the teams as conference rivals. The Soaring Eagles were playing their inaugural game in the NEHC.
• Black extended his points streak to 12 games going back to the end of the 2020 campaign and has produced 12 goals and 11 assists for 23 points during this stretch.
• Babson has won 21 of its last 22 games since 2020 when scoring first.
• The Beavers have scored on the power play in nine of their last 10 games going back to the start of the abbreviated 2021 campaign.
