Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine— No. 9 Babson College erupted for three first-period goals and that proved to be the difference Saturday afternoon as the Beavers went on to defeat Bowdoin College, 3-1, on day one of the Bowdoin-Colby Men's Hockey Faceoff Classic at Watson Arena.
Babson won its third game in a row to improve to 6-1-2 overall, while Bowdoin drops to 0-3 on the season. Colby knocked off Wentworth in the first game of the day, 7-3.
Seniors Hunter Garlasco (Mahwah, N.J.) and Ryan Black (Pomfret, Conn.) and junior Chris Rooney (Milton, Mass.) all scored for Babson in the opening period, with Garlasco connecting on his first goal in 31 career games. Junior Rory Casey (Newton, Mass.), senior Trevor Marcinick (Dublin, Onio), graduate student Paul Boutoussov (Dana Point, Calif.) and senior Max Torrez (Framingham, Mass.) all collected assists and graduate student Brad Arvanitis (Holliston, Mass.) made 25 saves to earn the victory in goal.
Junior Jimmy Duffy (Canton, Mass.) tallied the only goal for Bowdoin with a second-period power play marker, assisted by junior Andy Stoneman (Faribault, Minn.) and senior Kyle Jadatz (Kings Park, N.Y.). Sophomore Alex Kozic (Burnham Norton, UK) made 27 saves in the setback.
Babson jumped on top nine minutes into the opening frame when Casey and Marcinick set up Garlasco for a slapshot goal from the left circle. Black made it 2-0 four minutes later with an unassisted goal after stealing the puck at the blue line and beating Kozic short side from the left for his eighth of the season. Rooney tipped in a rebound after a shot from the right circle for his third of the season with 19 seconds remaining in the period, assisted by Boutoussov and Torrez.
That turned out to be all of the Babson scoring but Arvanitis did the rest. He stopped 14 of 15 Bowdoin shots in the second period and all nine in the third to seal the win. The Beavers, which outshot the hosts 15-3 in the first period, finished with a 30-26 shot advantage in the game.
Bowdoin was 1-for-4 on the power play while Babson came up empty in four tries with the man advantage.
Day two of the Bowdoin-Colby Faceoff Classic moves to Colby's Jack Kelley Rink on Sunday with Babson facing Colby at 4 p.m. following the Bowdoin-Wentworth game at 1 p.m.
