Box Score BRISTOL, R.I.—Roger Williams University closed the game with a 19-8 run to rally for a 66-60 victory over visiting Babson College in non-conference women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon inside the Campus Recreation Center.
Babson, which suffered its first loss of the year, is now 4-1, while Roger Williams improves to 2-0.
Junior Megan Bauman (East Lyme, Conn.) led all scorers with a season-high 16 points to go along with five assists for the Beavers. Sophomore Madison Odam (San Jose, Calif.) posted her first career double-double with 16 points and a career-high 18 rebounds, while classmate Kelly Walsh (Goffstown, N.H.) added 15 points in the loss.
Sophomore Katie Galligan (Pembroke, Mass.) led a balanced Hawks' attack with 15 points, while junior Kendi Barnard (Bedford, N.H.) and sophomore Caroline Elie (Rockland, Mass.) added 10 points apiece in the win.
First-year Reese Cordero (Whitman, Mass.) canned a three-pointer late in the opening quarter to spark an 11-0 run that helped Roger Williams build a 28-16 lead on a layup by Barnard midway through the second. Walsh and Odam combined for 11 straight points and Bauman and first-year Camilla Silk (Medfield, Mass.) converted layups on consecutive possessions to pull the Green and White back within 34-31 going to halftime.
The lead changed hands five times in the third period and Babson got a layup by sophomore Rachel McMenemy (Groton, Mass.) and two free throws from Odam to jump in front 45-41 at the 2:28 mark. The Hawks pulled even on a three-pointer by graduate student Sam Mancinelli (Peabody, Mass.) in the waning seconds of the stanza, but Odam drained a triple and Silk finished inside to give the Beavers their largest lead of the afternoon at 52-47 with 8:28 remaining in the contest.
Barnard scored on consecutive possessions to put Roger Williams ahead for good and Elie converted a layup to cap a 9-0 run that gave the hosts a 56-52 lead with 4:27 to play. McMenemy made 1-of-2 free throws to cut Babson's deficit to three, but junior Sophie Araneo (Branford, Conn.) answered with a three-point play on the ensuing possession to make it a six-point game with 3:45 left.
Both teams return to action on Tuesday as Babson hosts Brandeis at 5 p.m., while Roger Williams travels to UMass Dartmouth at 6 p.m.
GAME NOTES
• Saturday's game was the first between Babson and Roger Williams since the 1981-82 season and just the second all-time between the teams.
• Saturday's loss snapped the Beavers' 15-game winning streak, a run that dates back to last January.
• The teams combined to shoot 55 free throws and were whistled for 41 fouls in Saturday's contest.
