No. 8 Men's Ice Hockey tied by Castleton in NEHC contest

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Seniors Mike Egan (Billerica, Mass.) and Cam Schmitt (Andover, Mass.) both finished with a goal and an assist as No. 8 Babson College played to a 3-3 overtime tie with Castleton University in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's ice hockey action on Friday night inside the Babson Skating Center.

With the tie, Babson is now 3-1-2 overall and 2-1-2 in league play. Castleton snapped a five-game losing skid and improves to 1-5-1 overall and 0-2-1 in NEHC play.

Egan put the Green and White in front less than three minutes into the contest when he stripped a Castleton defender at the blue line and gained control of the puck in the corner before putting away a wraparound chance for his fourth goal of the year. Castleton pulled even just 1:10 into the second period when first-year Bryce Irwin (Victoria, B.C.) redirected a shot by sophomore Justin Stairs (Caledon, Ont.) from the left point past Babson graduate student Brad Arvanitis (Holliston, Mass.) for his second goal of the season.

The Beavers took their second lead of the night when grad student Paul Boutoussov (Dana Point, Calif.) jammed home the rebound of a shot by senior Cam Schmitt (Andover, Mass.) from the point on the power play at 13:50 of the second. The Spartans answered with their second power play tally of the night just 2:37 into third period though as junior Brandon Picard (Montreal, Que.) buried Irwin's feed across the top of the crease to make it 2-2.

Schmitt put Babson back in front with a wrist shot from the point at 11:59 of the third but grad student Glenn Wiswell (Berwick, Maine) forced overtime with his first goal of the season with just 2:07 left in regulation.

The Spartans killed off 90 seconds of a Beavers' power play to begin the extra session and got eight saves from freshman Dominic Rodrigue (Quebec City, Que.) before Babson was whistled for a minor with 1:32 remaining. Arvanitis made three saves over the final minute as each team earned a point.

Both teams return to action on Saturday at 4 p.m. as Babson hosts Skidmore, while Castleton travels to Southern Maine.
