Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Giancarlo Arguello (Key Biscayne, Fla.) scored the go-ahead goal in the 78th minute to help 23rd-ranked Babson College defeat visiting Cabrini College, 2-1, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
With its fourth straight win, Babson improves to 12-4-3 overall and advances to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011. Cabrini, which was making the program's seventh NCAA appearance, end the year at 13-5-2.
Senior Eamon Keenan (East Greenwich, R.I.) also scored and classmate Mitchell Collins (Burlington, Mass.) picked up an assist for the Beavers. Fellow senior Itai Rubin (Briarcliff, N.Y.) stopped two shots in the victory.
Sophomore Nolan Holloway (Glen Rock, Pa.) had a goal and senior Josh Cunningham (Havertown, Pa.) recorded an assist for the Cavaliers, who got three saves from classmate MJ Graham (Wilmington, Del.). The loss was the first of the year for Graham, which had gone 10-0-1 over his first 11 starts.
Junior Jack Dugan (Haddonfield, N.J.) hit the post in the 12th minute and the closest chance of the opening half came in the 40th minute when Cabrini senior Ben Cahill (Wilmington, Del.) came racing in to clear Babson sophomore Shamar Rainford's (Randolph, Mass.) shot that had ricocheted off Graham off the line to keep the game scoreless.
The Green and White eventually took the lead less than six minutes into the second half on Keenan's second goal. He rose up over a defender 10 yards from goal near the back post and hit a driving header that took one bounce through traffic and beat Graham to make it 1-0.
The Cavaliers pulled level in the 68th minute on Holloway's fourth goal. Cunningham received a service from the left flank and hit a one-touch pass to Holloway, who slipped a shot past Rubin from the penalty spot.
Babson took the lead for good with 12:12 to go in regulation thanks to Arguello's third straight game-winning goal. Senior Ross Shellow (Miami, Fla.) got the counter attack started by winning back the ball deep in the hosts' defensive end and classmate Ben Cawood (Santa Rosa, Calif.) played a ball into space down the left side for Arguello, who gained the box and tucked his finish inside the near post.
The Beavers finished with a 19-9 edge in shots and held a slim 6-5 lead in corner kicks.
Babson will host No. 19/4 Amherst in a second round match on Sunday beginning at 12:30 p.m.
