Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Six different players scored and sophomore Nolan Hildebrand (Penticton, British Columbia) made 25 saves to record his first career shutout as Babson College defeated visiting Castleton University, 6-0, in men's ice hockey action on Saturday afternoon inside the Babson Skating Center.
Senior Patrick Flynn (Framingham, Mass.) recorded a goal and two assists for three points, while juniors Cam Schmitt (Andover, Mass.) and Matt Wiesner (Newport Beach, Calif.) each chipped in with a goal and an assist for the Beavers. Juniors Ryan Black (Pomfret, Conn.) and Max Torrez (Framingham, Mass.) and first-year Thomas Kramer (Bridgewater, Mass.) also scored, and sophomores Andrew Holland (Winchester, Mass.) and Chris Rooney (Milton, Mass.) contributed two assists apiece in the victory.
Sophomore Brandon Collett (Brockton, Mass.) made 34 saves on 39 shots, while junior Kyle Alaverdy (Grand Falls-Windsor, Newfoundland) turned away six shots over the final 13 minutes for the Spartans (0-1).
Babson (1-0) jumped on top 9:04 into the opening period when Rooney won an offensive zone face-off and found Torrez, who snapped a shot past Collett from the slot. The Green and White doubled its advantage just over three minutes later when Schmitt rushed to the front of the net to clean up a rebound following a rush up ice by Holland.
Rooney intercepted a pass in the neutral zone to help set up Kramer's first career goal, which extended the Beavers' lead to 3-0 just 2:18 into the second period. Black got on the board at the 9:00 minute mark, scoring with a blast from the left circle following a save by Collett on Wiesner's re-direct attempt.
Wiesner scored on a wrist shot from the right circle 6:30 into the third period and Flynn finished off a 2-on-1 rush with a little over six minutes to play for the final margin.
Hildebrand, who was making just his second career start, made 20 of his 25 saves in the first two periods. He was tested in the third though, as he came up with back-to-back stops on first-year Justin Stairs (Caledon, Ontario) and sophomore Calvin Moise (Saint-Eustace, Quebec) before handling Castleton senior Glenn Wiswell's (Berwick, Maine) slap shot with under eight minutes to play.
The Beavers, who went 1-for-3 on the power play, finished with a 46-25 edge in shots on goal.
Babson returns to action on Friday when it hosts Anna Maria at 6:30 p.m., while Castleton travels to Albertus Magnus on February 12 for a 4 p.m. start.
