Genaro, Baseball Shut Down Ohio Wesleyan in Florida Opener, 7-2

Box Score

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.—Senior Michael Genaro (Greenwich, Conn.) allowed just one run over 8.1 innings and classmate Edward Lehr (Byram Township, N.J.) and junior Jake Oliger (Newtown, Conn.) combined for five RBI as Babson College defeated Ohio Wesleyan University, 7-2, in non-conference baseball action on Friday afternoon.

Babson, which was playing the first of six games in Florida, improves to 2-2, while Ohio Wesleyan slips to 4-4 on the year.

Oliger homered and drove in three runs, Lehr doubled twice and drove in two runs, and junior Alex DiMartino (Mahwah, N.J.) added an RBI double as part of a two-hit day for the Beavers. Senior Brian McHale (Ramsey, N.J.) and junior Sean Harrington (Walpole, Mass.) also had two hits apiece, while seniors Connor Gill (Sterling, Mass.) and Eric Jaun (Loveland, Ohio) both scored a pair of runs.

Junior Canyon McWilliams (Shaker Heights, Ohio) singled and drove in both runs for the Battling Bishops, who were held to just four hits. Classmate Chris Punka (Tallmadge, Ohio) started and suffered the loss after giving up four runs, three of them earned, on seven hits in 3.2 innings to fall to 0-1 on the year.

The Green and White took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third as Gill reached on a fielder's choice and stole second before coming home on Lehr's two-out double to the base of the wall in left. The Beavers added to their lead in the fourth as Oliger followed a leadoff single by junior Matthew Valente (Wyckoff, N.J.) with a two-run homer to left to make it 3-0.

McHale drove in Jaun with an RBI knock later in the inning, and DiMartino laced a two-out double to deep left center to bring in Jaun extending the lead to 5-0 in the eighth. Babson tacked on two more runs in the ninth as Lehr plated Gill with his second double of the afternoon before coming around to score on Oliger's two-out single up the middle.

Genaro (1-1), who struck out three and allowed just three hits, worked out of a jam following an error in the second and then retired 16 of the next 17 batters he faced, including 12 straight from the fourth through the seventh. Ohio Wesleyan took advantage of a walk and an error to score a pair of runs in the ninth before sophomore Tyler Bell (Abington, Mass.) induced a groundball double-play to close out the win.

Babson returns to action on Saturday when it faces Vassar at 12 p.m. and Eastern Connecticut State at 3:30 p.m. in Port Charlotte.
