Box Score CARLISLE, Pa. – Babson College first-year Mitchell Collins (Burlington, Mass.) scored in the sixth-minute and Dickinson sophomore College Colin Fagan (Chalfont, Pa.) notched the equalizer with a little over 20 minutes remaining in regulation as the teams played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw in non-conference men's soccer action on Friday night at Dickinson Park.
First-year Liam Hanlon (Boxborough, Mass.) recorded an assist on the lone Babson goal, while junior goalkeeper Steven Heintzelman (Middleton, Mass.) turned away five of six shots in his second career start for the Beavers.
Dickinson junior Kevin Gilbert (Boxford, Mass.) earned an assist on Fagan's goal and sophomore goalkeeper John Baney (Ridgewood, N.J.) turned away seven of the eight shots he faced.
The Beavers got off to a quick start after Hanlon was able to find Collins with a cross into the box to put Babson ahead 1-0 just 5:40 into the match. The Green and White headed into the half with a 1-0 lead, but trailed in both shots and corners kicks 12-8, and 4-2, respectively.
Dickinson started off the second half with offensive pressure as Heintzelman was called upon to make two crucial saves on shots by Gilbert in the first five minutes of the period. After a failed corner kick attempt, the Red Devils were able to regain possession and find the equalizer in the 68th minute.
Junior Chris Czarnecki (Baltimore, Md.) and first-year Ross Shellow (Miami, Fla.) recorded shots on goal late in regulation but neither was able to convert sending the game to extra time deadlocked at 1-1.
Babson outshot Dickinson 6-1 through two overtimes with only senior Noah Parker's (Hampden, Maine) attempt that was saved by Baney finding the frame.
Both teams return to action on Saturday as the Beavers head to Elizabathtown at 5:30 p.m., while Dickinson is set to host Keystone tomorrow at 5:00 pm.
GAME NOTES
• Friday's match was the first in program history against Dickinson.
• Babson had not gone to overtime or had its season opener finish in a tie since playing to a 0-0 2OT draw with Western New England to kick off the 2002 campaign.
• The Beavers are now 29-6-4 when scoring first going back to the start of the 2015 season.
• The Green and White is 18-5-5 when conceding one goal or less dating back to the start of 2015.
BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-year Youcef Ziad (Holbrook, Mass.) scored in the 27th minute and junior goalkeeper James Takami (Kenmore, Wash.) made a career-high eight saves as Babson College and No. 6 NSCAA/No. 9 D3soccer.com UMass Boston battled to a 1-1 double-overtime draw in non-conference men's soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
Babson, which is unbeaten in its last five matches, is now 5-4-3 on the year, while the region's top-ranked team, UMass Boston, is now 10-0-1.
The Beacons had the Green and White on its heels early and nearly scored in the game's opening minute as sophomore Mohamed Kenawy (Revere, Mass.) had a shot cleared off the line by a Beavers' defender before hitting the crossbar with his rebound attempt. Babson took advantage of its good fortune in the 27th minute when Ziad ran onto a thru ball from senior Caleb Long (Kingston, Mass.) and slotted a shot inside the left post for his first career goal and 1-0 lead.
Takami made a diving save on Kenawy in the 28th minute and then punched his 30-yard free kick over the crossbar in the 31st minute to maintain a one-goal lead at the break. The Beavers' defense blocked a pair of attempts by UMass Boston first-year Luis Tavares (Praia, Cape Verde) following a corner kick in the 67th minute, while sophomore Carlo Araujo (Mexico City, Mexico) cleared another potential scoring opportunity out of the goal mouth following a failed clear by Takami in the 68th minute.
The Beacons finally broke through with an equalizer in the 85th minute following one of the few mistakes of the day by the Babson defense. UMass Boston was awarded an indirect kick inside the 18-yard box and Morales hit a 10-yard rocket following a touch from junior Marcelo Cunha (Goiania, Brazil) to level the score.
The Beacons outshot the Beavers 6-1 in overtime, although each team finished with just one shot on target.
First-year goalkeeper Omar Castro-Dreher (Woonsocket, R.I.) finished with two saves for UMass Boston, which enjoyed a 34-7 edge in shots and a 19-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson hosts Clark at 1 p.m., while UMass Boston will play just its second home game of the year against UMass Dartmouth at 7 p.m.
