No. 14/15 Men's Ice Hockey Downs Johnson & Wales to Stay Unbeaten, 5-1

PAWTUCKET, R.I.— No. 14 USCHO.com/No. 15 D3hockey.com Babson College recorded four unanswered goals over the last two periods to defeat Johnson & Wales University, 5-1, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's ice hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Lynch Arena.

With the win, the Beavers improve to 6-0-1 overall and 5-0-1 in league play, while the Wildcats slip to 0-4-2 overall and 0-3-1 in the NEHC with its third consecutive loss.

Sophomore Nick Rosa (Birmingham, Mich.), classmate Christian Faggas (Norwood, Mass.), and first-year Mike Egan (Billerica, Mass.) each recorded a goal and an assist, while senior Stevie DeForge (Norwood, Mass.) and sophomore Patrick Flynn (Framingham, Mass.) both chipped in with a goal apiece. Senior Tommy Munichiello (Weymouth, Mass.) and first-year Ryan Black (Pomfret, Conn.) both tallied two assists and first-year Matt Wiesner (Newport Beach, Calif.) contributed one assist in the victory. Senior goaltender Matt Pompa (Palm City, Fla.) made 24 saves to improve to 4-0-0 on the season for Babson.

Sophomore Jordon Stone (Parker, Colo.) logged the lone goal for the Wildcats, while juniors Connor Bechtel (Doylestown, Pa.) and Jake Gold (Cumberland, R.I.) each picked up an assist. The duo of sophomore Mike Rockwell (Poughquag, N.Y.), who started and played the first 40 minutes in net, and Tyler Ellor (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) combined for 36 saves in the loss for Johnson & Wales.

The Wildcats got on the board first when Stone found the back of the net in the opening minute, but the Beavers answered back when DeForge put away his first goal of the season off an assist from Faggas less than six minutes later. The Green and White took the lead 12:35 into the second period when Rosa nothced his team-leading seventh goal of the year, and Babson doubled its lead three minutes later when Faggas scored a power-play goal off an assist from Black and Wiesner.

Leading 3-1 heading to the third period the Beavers tacked on two more goals to end the night. Flynn lit the lamp off an assist from Black just over a minute in the period, and Egan scored the final goal of the game with the assistance of Rosa and Munichiello for the final margin. 

The Beavers outshot the Wildcats 36-25 and finishes 1-for-3 on the power play. Johnson & Wales was scoreless on five power play opportunities. 

Both teams return to action on Tuesday as Babson hosts Tufts at 7 p.m., while Johnson & Wales hits the road for a 7:35 p.m. matchup with Assumption.

GAME NOTES
• Saturday's matchup was the first in program history for Babson against Johnson & Wales, which is in its first season in the NEHC.
• Babson 3-0-0 on the road this season, and 8-3-1 on the road against conference foes since the start of last year.
• The Beavers' five-game winning streak is their longest since ripping off seven consecutive victories between November 5-26, 2017.
• Both Rosa and Wiesner have produced at least one point in six of the first seven games.
