Box Score BOSTON—Babson College junior Matt McMorrow (Pearl River, N.Y.) tied the game midway through the second period, but UMass Boston responded with four unanswered goals to defeat the Beavers, 5-1, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) men's ice hockey action on Thursday night at historic Fenway Park.
Babson, which has dropped two straight games, is now 8-7-1 overall and 5-4-0 in conference play, while the Beacons improve to 9-5-2 overall and 4-4-1 in the NEHC.
Five different players scored for UMass Boston, which exploded for four goals in the second period. Junior Colin Larkin (Waterford, Mich.) finished with three assists and first-year Dakota Keene (Poland, Maine) set up a pair of goals, while classmate Bailey McBurnie (Beverly, Mass.) turned away 37 shots to earn his second career win.
Juniors Ryan Gouveia (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Jake Donahue (Groveland, Mass.) both recorded an assist for the Beavers, who got 24 saves from sophomore netminder Matt Pompa (Palm City, Fla.).
Following a scoreless first period, the Green and White appeared to take a 1-0 lead when junior Charlie Ackerman (Bradenton, Fla.) tipped in the rebound of his own shot at the 6:25 mark. The goal was waved off and the Beacons took advantage when frist-year Ryan Cusin (Detroit, Mich.) beat Pompa from the slot just 25 seconds later for the game's opening tally.
McMorrow tied the game less than four minutes later when he poked home the rebound of a shot by Gouveia, but UMass Boston responded 64 seconds later with the first of three goals in the span of 3:52 to build a 4-1 advantage at 14:26 of the second period. MacBurnie made four saves on a Babson power play in the opening minutes of the third period, and senior Tyler Bishop (Ramsey, N.J.) tacked on an insurance goal at 11:19 of the stanza for the final margin.
The Beavers, who went 0-for-3 on the power play, finished with a 38-29 edge in shots. The Beacons did not score on their only power play attempt of the night late in the opening period
Babson and UMass Boston will wrap up its two-game series at the Beacons Ice Arena on Saturday at 4 p.m.
