Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Junior Dante Petrocelli (Sucasunna, N.J.) finished with a goal and an assist as visiting William Paterson University defeated Babson College, 2-0, in non-conference men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.
With its second consecutive loss, Babson is now 1-2-0 on the year, while William Paterson improves to 2-1-0.
Junior James Takami (Kenmore, Wash.) finished with six saves for the Beavers. First-year Ryan Quigley (Columbus, N.J.) turned away three shots for the Pioneers.
William Paterson took the lead in the 12th minute on Petrocelli's first goal of the season. Junior JP Gonzales (Paterson, N.J.) played a long diagonal ball from the left sideline deep in his defensive end for Petrocelli, who took one touch at the top of the box and ripped a shot into the upper left corner.
Babson had arguably its two best scoring chances of the game in the opening 45 minutes. Junior Logan Ventura (Pittstown, N.J.) sent his header just wide of the back post following a corner kick by classmate HS Jung (Seoul, Republic of Korea) in the eighth minute. Fellow junior Pat O'Rourke (Hingham, Mass.) then hit the crossbar with a 40-yard blast in the 36th minute.
The Beavers held an 8-5 edge in second-half shots, but put just two on frame and were unable to find an equalizer. Sophomore Ian Fromhein (Osterville, Mass.) had his attempt from just outside the six-yard box saved by Quigley in the 69th minute, while Ventura and senior Adam Villari (Landsdale, Pa.) both fired shots wide in the final 10 minutes of the match.
The Pioneers put the game away on senior Fabian Allen's (Morristown, N.J.) marker following a goal kick with 1:10 to go. Petrocelli collected a loose ball at the midfield line and later found Allen, who slotted a low shot past Takami, who came charging off his line, to seal the victory.
Both teams finished with 14 shots, while William Paterson held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Both teams return to action next Saturday as Babson hosts Brandeis at 2:30 p.m., while the Pioneers visit Vassar at 2 p.m.
