Men's Soccer Falls to Rutgers-Newark, 3-2

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—First-year Fabio De Sousa (Long Branch, N.J.) scored the go-ahead goal in the 64th minute as visiting Rutgers University-Newark defeated Babson College, 3-2, in non-conference men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

With the loss, Babson is now 1-1-0 on the year, while Rutgers-Newark improves to 2-0-0.

Sophomore Jackson Greenspan (Meriden, N.H.) and first-year Alex Crompton (Killington, Vt.) each scored their first career goals for the Beavers. Senior Caleb Long (Kingston, Mass.) and junior HS Jung (Seoul, Republic of Korea) both recorded an assist.

De Sousa and senior Sebastian Gostynski (Garfield, N.J.) both finished with a goal and an assist for the Scarlet Raiders.

Babson junior goalkeeper James Takami (Kenmore, Wash.) made four of his five saves in the opening 28 minutes, and the hosts took advantage of his work by taking the lead in the 33rd minute when Greenspan headed home Jung's corner kick for a 1-0 lead.

Rutgers-Newark pulled even with 44 seconds to go in the first half when junior Isaiah Kuris (Mount Holly, N.J.) touched home a rebound after De Sousa's free kick from the top of the box hit the left post. The Scarlet Raiders took their first lead of the afternoon in the 61st minute when Gostynski collected a pass from first-year Breno Lutosa (Kearny, N.J.) and drilled a 10-yard shot just under the crossbar for his third goal of the season.

The Beavers equalized just under two minutes later though, as Crompton beat Rutgers-Newark first-year goalkeeper Andres Medina (Manalapan, N.J.) with his header off of Long's free kick from the right sideline. The deadlock lasted just 65 seconds as De Sousa notched the eventual game-winning marker when he headed home Gostynski's cross from the right flank for a 3-2 advantage at the 63:14 mark.

Babson's best opportunity to tie the game came in the 86th minute, but Medina dove to his right to corral junior Logan Ventura's (Pittstown, N.J.) from the edge of the six-yard box.

Medina finished with a pair of saves for the Scarlet Raiders, who finished with a 20-7 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Both teams will return to action on Sunday at 1 p.m. as Babson hosts William Paterson, while Rutgers-Newark visits Wheaton.
