Men's Soccer Edged by Williams, 1-0

Box Score

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.—Senior Mohammed Rashid (Accra, Ghana) scored the only goal of the match in the fourth minute to help Williams College defeat visiting Babson College, 1-0, in non-conference men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Cole Field.

With its second consecutive loss, Babson is now 2-4-1 on the year, while Williams remains unbeaten at 4-0-1.

Junior goalkeeper James Takami (Kenmore, Wash.) finished with four saves for the Beavers, who were unable to convert on a game-tying penalty kick in the 90th minute. Senior Christian Alcorn (Richmond, Va.) also stopped four shots for the Ephs.

Rashid's marker came against the run of play just 3:58 into the contest when he took a centering pass from junior Daniel Madding (Hillsborough, Calif.) and beat Takami for the early lead. The Green and White outshot Williams 7-6 in the first half and had its best scoring chance in the 28th minute when sophomore Noah Parker (Hampden, Maine) created space at the top of the box on the left flank before sending his shot high.

Senior Caleb Long's (Kingston, Mass.) shot curled wide in the 58th minute, while sophomore Ian Fromhein (Osterville, Mass.) was unable to get full power on an attempt with his back to goal from the edge of the six-yard box in the 82nd minute. The Beavers finally caught a break in the final minute when first-year Alex Crompton (Killington, Vt.) was pulled down while trying to play a service in the box, but Alcorn made a sprawling save to tip away Parker's penalty kick with 37 seconds remaining.

Parker got off one final shot following a corner kick with 23 seconds to go, but the Ephs were able to clear the ball out of danger to hang on for the win.

Babson finished with a 15-12 edge in shots and an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks on the day.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday as Babson hosts Lesley at 4 p.m., while Williams wraps up its six-game home stand against Rensselaer at 4:30 p.m.
