Fourth-Quarter Rally Sends Men's Lacrosse Past Clark, 14-13

WORCESTER, Mass.—Senior Scott Doten (Western Springs, Ill.) scored three of his career-high six goals in the fourth quarter, including the game winner with 40 seconds remaining, as visiting Babson College rallied to defeat Clark University, 14-13, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon.

With its sixth consecutive victory, Babson is now 7-7 overall and 4-1 in league play, while Clark falls to 9-4 overall and 2-3 in the NEWMAC.

Junior Connor Flaherty (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) and sophomore Austin Fabel (East Rockaway, N.Y.) both scored twice for the Beavers. Classmate Connor Maloney (Hopkinton, Mass.) finished with a team-high six ground balls and won 10-of-18 face-offs, while junior Zach Cattaruzza (Guliford, Conn.) added four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Junior Isaac Bass (Amherst, Mass.) scored four times and senior Rob Holden (East Longmeadow, Mass.) added three goals for the Cougars. Classmate Alex Turgeon (Holden, Mass.) led all players with 11 ground balls, while sophomore Will Roberts (Paxton, Mass.) added six ground balls and a game-high five caused turnovers.

Following a first half that featured four ties and four lead changes, Bass gave Clark a 5-4 lead at the break with his second goal of the day just 47 seconds before halftime. Junior Connor Hinton (Florham Park, N.J.) won the opening face-off of the second half and set up Fabel's goal to make it 5-5, but the Cougars responded with a three-goal run to take an 8-5 advantage on first-year Brandon King's (Eastham, Mass.) tally at the 10:21 mark.

Back-to-back scores by first-year Brendan Duffy (Duxbury, Mass.) and senior Brendan Coan (Towson, Md.) got the Beavers back within 8-7 with 6:05 to go in the third. Holden and Bass scored a minute apart though, to push the lead back to 10-7 with 4:39 left in the frame, and Bass followed with another marker 1:27 into the fourth to match Clark's biggest lead of the day at 11-8.

The Green and White responded with four straight goals in less than three minutes to take its first lead since midway through the first quarter. Goals by Doten and first-year Samuel Mishkind (Chappaqua, N.Y.) got the visitors within 11-10 with 11:25 to go. Doten set up Flaherty's tally 28 seconds later, and then put the Beavers ahead 12-11 with his fifth goal of the day with 9:37 remaining.

The Cougars went back in front 13-12 with 6:30 left after back-to-back goals by Holden, but Fabel tied the contest just over three minutes later. Turgeon won the ensuing face-off for Clark, but Babson sophomore Jack O'Donoghue (Scituate, Mass.) forced a turnover to help set up Doten's game-winning marker.

Sophomore Jordan Shapiro (Pleasantville, N.Y.) finished with saves for the Green and White, while Drew Riopelle-Tyrell (Northville, Mich.) stopped 13 shots for the Cougars.

The Beavers held a 45-37 edge in shots, including a 16-6 advantage in the decisive fourth quarter.

Clark won 16-of-30 face-offs and finished with a 34-26 edge in ground balls.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as Babson hosts Emerson, while Clark visits Springfield.

• The Beavers are now 20-0 all-time against Clark, which includes a pair of one-goal victories in their last two trips to Worcester.
• In four career games against Clark, Doten has scored 10 goals to go along with seven assists for 17 points.
• Babson is 21-3 in the last four seasons against NEWMAC foes.
• The Beavers are 2-1 this season in one-goal games.
