Box Score LAKELAND, Fla.—Babson College sophomore Austin Fabel (East Rockaway, N.Y.) finished with three goals and three assists, but Colorado College used a 5-2 advantage in the fourth quarter to defeat the Beavers, 16-13, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday morning at Florida Southern College.
With its second straight loss, Babson is now 1-4 on the year, while Colorado College improves to 6-3 overall.
Senior Brendan Coan (Towson, Md.) scored a season-high three goals, while classmate Scott Doten (Western Springs, Ill.) and junior Connor Flaherty (Honeoye Falls, N.Y.) each scored twice for the Beavers. Sophomore Jack O'Donoghue (Scituate, Mass.) scooped up a team-high eight ground balls and tied for team-high honors with two caused turnovers.
Junior Austin Davie (Erie, Colo.) scored a game-high six goals, while first-year Tyler Borko (Atlanta, Ga.) contributed four goals and three assists for the Tigers. Classmate Parker Woo (Seattle, Wash.) won 21-of-32 face-offs and led all players with 14 groundballs in the win.
The Green and White took a 2-1 lead on goals by senior Spencer Low (Natick, Mass.) and Flaherty with 5:02 to go in the first quarter. Colorado College responded with a four-goal run, including back-to-back scores by Davie to go in front 5-2 with 11:03 left in the second quarter. The Beavers ripped off three straight markers, including a man-up score by sophomore Jason Cox (Westwood, Mass.) to tie the game, and then took a 7-6 on Coan's first goal of the game with 25 seconds left in the stanza. Borko scooped up the ground ball on the ensuing face-off though, and scored with 12 seconds to go in the period for a 7-7 deadlock at the break.
Consecutive goals by Coan and Fabel just 1:28 apart put Babson in front 9-8 with 9:18 to go in the third quarter. Colorado College countered with three straight markers to take an 11-9 advantage on a man-up score by sophomore Robert Stern (Lafayette, Calif.) with 5:30 left in the stanza. Flaherty converted a feed from Fabel and Doten notched an man-up goal to pull even at 11-11 at the 2:26 mark of the third quarter.
The Tigers took the lead for good on tallies by Davie and Borko to open a 13-11 edge with 10:06 to play in the fourth. Coan pulled the Beavers back within one on his third goal of the game with 8:45 remaining, but Colorado College struck for three consecutive goals to take its biggest lead of the game at 16-12 with 1:25 left in the fourth.
Babson sophomore Jordan Shapiro (Pleasantville, N.Y.) made nine saves, while Tigers' senior Chase Murphy (Cohasset, Mass.) stopped 19 shots.
The Beavers finished with a 51-48 edge in shots and were 19-of-21 on their clearing opportunities, but won just 12-of-33 face-offs.
Babson returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to Trinity for a 4 p.m. start.
