Villari's Late Finish Sends Men's Soccer Past Clark in 2OT, 1-0

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Adam Villari (Landsdale, Pa.) scored with five seconds remaining in the second overtime period to lift Babson College to a 1-0 victory over visiting Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

Babson, which is unbeaten over its last six matches, is now 6-4-3 overall and 3-1-0 in league play, while Clark, ranked eighth in the most recent NSCAA regional poll, falls to 10-2-0 overall and 2-2-0 in the NEWMAC.

After battling for 110 scoreless minutes, Villari took a thru ball from sophomore Ian Fromhein (Osterville, Mass.) and found himself all alone in the box before ripping a shot past Cougars' junior goalkeeper Connor Maguire (Dunstable, Mass.) and inside the near post for his third game-winning goal of the season.

Junior James Takami (Kenmore, Wash.) finished with three saves for Babson, while Maguire stopped a season-high nine shots for the Cougars.

The Green and White dominated the match statistically and had some of its best scoring chances in the opening 45 minutes. Maguire came charging off his line to get a piece of a shot by first-year Youcef Ziad (Holbrook, Mass.) in the 25th minute and then made the save of the game to get his fingertips on a header by first-year Alex Crompton (Killington, Vt.) just before halftime.

Maguire made another diving stop on an attempt by Ziad from the left edge of the box in the 67th minute, while Clark first-year Trevor Sheridan (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) cleared Beavers' sophomore Jackson Greenspan's (Meriden, N.H.) header off the goal line in the 86th minute. Babson junior Ian Cicalis (East Falmouth, Mass.) missed just wide on his volley in the first minute of overtime and the Cougars' best chance of the match came just before Villari's game winner when senior Zach Blais (Tiverton, R.I.) sent his 25-yard blast just wide of the left post.

The Beavers finished with a 24-7 edge in shots, and 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Babson returns to action next Saturday at 12 p.m. when it travels to Springfield, while Clark hosts Fitchburg State on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
