Box Score BOSTON—First-year Youcef Ziad (Holbrook, Mass.) scored twice and classmate Isle Raftery (Seattle, Wash.) added another goal as visiting Babson College scored three times in the second half to defeat Emerson College, 3-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at Rotch Field.
Babson (11-4-3, 6-1-0 NEWMAC), which has won six consecutive games and is unbeaten in its last 11 matches, clinched its first regular season conference title since 2012. Emerson sees its season come to an end at 5-11-0 overall and 1-6-0 in league play.
Senior Adam Villari (Lansdale, Pa.), junior Pat O'Rourke (Hingham, Mass.), sophomore Addison Choi (Fullerton, Calif.) and first-year Alex Crompton (Killington, Vt.) all finished with an assist for the Beavers, who are ranked seventh in the most recent NCAA regional rankings. Junior goalkeeper James Takami (Kenmore, Wash.) made three saves to record his seventh clean sheet.
Junior Lucas Fischer (Atlanta, Ga.) turned away seven shots for the Lions.
After a scoreless first half, Babson took the lead on the first of Ziad's two goals in the 58th minute. O'Rourke won a goal kick in the midfield to start the play and Ziad collected a through ball from Villari before burying his finish past Fischer, who was charging off his line, for a 1-0 advantage.
Raftery doubled the lead in the 77th minute with his first career marker. After taking a pass from Choi, he hit a low shot that bounced over the diving Fischer. Ziad capped the scoring 10 minutes later when he gained possession of the ball along the left sideline before beating a defender and ripping a shot past Fischer on a breakaway for his fourth tally of the year.
The Beavers finished with a 20-9 edge in shots and attempted 10 of the game's 11 corner kicks.
Babson, which has earned the top seed in the NEWMAC Tournament, will host the first of two semifinal matches at Hartwell-Rogers Field next Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
