Three-Goal Second Period Helps No. 2/4 Men's Ice Hockey Edge No. 11/12 Amherst, 4-2

Box Score

SALEM, Mass.—Juniors Tim Searles (Chesapeake, Va.) and Bill Seligman (Toronto, Ontario) both had a goal and an assist to help No. 2 USCHO.com/No. 4 D3hockey.com Babson College defeat No. 11 USCHO.com/No. 12 D3hockey.com Amherst College, 4-2, in non-conference men's ice hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Rockett Arena.

With its third straight win, Babson is now 10-1-1 overall, while Amherst, which is winless in three consecutive games, falls to 3-3-3 on the year.

Sophomore Joe DePietto (Westbury, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the year and classmate Rob Devaney (Reading, Mass.) added a late empty netter for the Beavers. Senior Mike Vollmin (Wilmington, N.C.) recorded two assists, while classmate Jimmy Magrath (Medfield, Mass.), junior Michael Phillips (Richmond Heights, Ohio), sophomore Jake Donahue (Groveland, Mass.) and first-year Matt Michalke (Parma, Ohio) all chipped in with one assist apiece.

First-year Phil Johansson (Saint-Zotique, Quebec) scored a pair of goals and senior Topher Flanagan (Edmonton, Alberta) added two assists for the Lord Jeffs.

Following a scoreless opening 20 minutes, Babson took command of the game with a three-goal second period. Seligman put the Green and White on top at the 7:27 mark with his fifth tally of the year, burying a shot from the top of the slot after Searles was denied by Amherst senior goaltender Dave Cunningham (Arlington, Mass.).

Devaney created a turnover and broke in on Cunningham only to be denied a little over nine minutes into the frame, but Searles was able to extend the lead at 14:25, notching his fourth goal of the year with a wrist shot from the right circle. DePietto followed with the second goal of his career at 19:43, converting a feed from Magrath on an odd-man rush for a 3-0 edge.

Babson was unable to score on the only power play of the third period, and the Lord Jeffs took advantage with two goals in the span of 2:51 to make it 3-2. Johansson beat Beavers' senior netminder Jamie Murray (Scituate, Mass.) with a wrist shot from the high slot at 7:57 and then followed with a blast from just inside the blue line to make it a one-goal game at the 10:48 mark.

The Green and White capped the victory with a late empty net tally though, as Devaney was able to stay onside while collecting a feed from Phillips before netting his seventh goal of the year with 26.4 seconds to play.

Murray finished with 20 saves for Babson, 10 of which came in the second period, while Cunningham stopped 21 shots for Amherst.

Both teams return to action on Sunday at the Babson Skating Center as Babson hosts Endicott at 4 p.m., while Amherst faces Salem State at 1 p.m.
