Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Sophomore Colin Larkin (Waterford, Mich.) scored twice and senior goaltender Billy Faust (Alta Loma, Calif.) made 35 saves to help No. 5 USCHO.com/No. 8 D3hockey.com University of Massachusetts-Boston defeat No. 7 USCHO.com/No. 9 D3hockey.com Babson College, 4-1, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action on Saturday at the Babson Skating Center.
After splitting the weekend home-and-home series, Babson is 11-4-2 overall and 7-2-1 in conference play, while UMass-Boston is 13-3-1 overall and 9-1-0 in the NEHC.
First-year Matt Brazel (Hingham, Mass.) scored the Beavers' lone goal, while senior Max Franklin (Wrentham, Mass.) and junior Bill Seligman (Toronto, Ontario) both chipped in with an assist. Senior netminder Jamie Murray (Scituate, Mass.) finished with 32 saves.
Senior Alex Demchuk (Calgary, Alberta) and junior Albee Daley (Averill Park, N.Y.) each scored once for the Beacons, while senior Matt Lemire (Townsend, Mass.) finished with two assists.
Larkin opened the scoring just 1:31 into the first period when he tipped home a blast by first-year Gabe Chuckran (Media, Pa.) at the right post for his eighth goal of the year. UMass-Boston extended its lead just over five minutes later as Demchuk, who had his first attempt stuffed by Murray, poked home his own rebound for a two-goal lead at the 6:44 mark.
Babson was unable to take advantage of its only first-period power play midway through the stanza, but got on the board at the 12:45 mark, cutting the deficit in half on Brazel's fifth goal of the season. Murray came up with two saves in the final 74 seconds of the first and three more early in the second as the Beavers killed off a pair of penalties. He finished with 10 stops in the middle period, while his counterpart Faust turned away 17 shots to help the Beacons maintain their one-goal lead going to the third.
The Green and White was whistled for a five-minute major just 1:42 after intermission and UMass-Boston took advantage by adding to its lead. Just moments after junior Tyler Bishop (Ramsey, N.J.) hit the post, Larkin scored off a blast from the blue line to make it 3-1 at the 4:22 mark. Babson sophomore Ryan Gouveia (Dartmouth, Mass.) hit the pipe with just under 10 minutes left and then was stuffed at the right post before having his wrap-around chance on the rebound denied by Faust with 7:05 to go.
The Beavers pulled Murray for an extra attacker with 2:27 left, but Daley killed the hosts comeback hopes with an empty net goal at 19:25.
The Green and White finished 0-for-2 on the power play, while the Beacons scored once on four power play opportunities.
Both teams return to action on Friday at 7 p.m. as Babson hosts Castleton, while UMass-Boston takes on Skidmore.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are 43-15-6 all-time against UMass-Boston and the teams have split their regular-season meetings in each of the last two years.
• Babson has suffered back-to-back home losses in the same season for the first time since February 18-19, 2011.
• The Beavers are now 1-4-0 on the year when trailing after the first period.
• Babson's 23 penalty minutes matched its season high from a 1-0 win at Castleton on November 14.
