Field Hockey Downs Eastern Connecticut State, 3-1, Off To Best Start In Program History

Box Score

MANSFIELD, Conn.—Junior Kelsi McDougle (Hopedale, Mass.) scored the go-ahead goal 10:41 into the second half as 19th-ranked Babson College went on to defeat Eastern Connecticut State University, 3-1, in non-conference field hockey action on Tuesday afternoon at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.

Babson (8-0), which is off to its best start in program history, equaled the program's longest winning set back in 2003 with the victory. Eastern Connecticut State, which has dropped three of its last four games, is now 3-3 on the year.

Senior Elizabeth Holmes (Southborough, Mass.) continued her torrid start with a pair of goals for the Beavers. First-years Lauren Drakeley (Woodbury, Conn.) and Ashley Tango (Reading, Mass.) each chipped in with an assist.

Sophomore Alex Kallgren (Dudley, Mass.) scored her team-leading sixth goal of the year, while senior Hannah Keiser (Danbury, Conn.) contributed an assist for the Warriors.

The Green and White started fast earning two penalty corners in the opening 90 seconds and taking a 1-0 lead on Holmes' eight marker of the year just 1:32 into the contest. Eastern Connecticut State tied the game at the 25:26 mark though, as Kallgren tipped in Keiser's pass at the left post.

Babson came storming out of the break and  finally broke through after three shots were denied by Warriors' sophomore goalkeeper Maddie LaRusso (Enfield, Conn.) on McDougle's second goal of the year in the 46th minute. Holmes then re-directed Drakeley's blast off a penalty corner to give the Beavers a two-goal cushion at the 47:56 mark.

Senior Kayla Costa (Watertown, Mass.) finished with two saves for the Green and White, while LaRusso and junior Samantha Scavo (Redding, Conn.) combined to stop five shots for Eastern Connecticut State.

The Beavers finished with a 12-4 edge in shots and a 13-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Babson returns home to take on Gordon on Thursday at 6 p.m., while the Warriors will host Framingham State on Saturday at 12 p.m.
