Field Hockey Powers Past Johnson & Wales, 6-0, For Seventh Straight Win

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior Elizabeth Holmes (Southborough, Mass.) and sophomore Elise Towers (Cicero, N.Y.) each scored twice as Babson College defeated visiting Johnson & Wales University, 6-0, in non-conference field hockey action on Sunday afternoon at MacDowell Field.

With the victory, Babson is now 7-0 on the year, while Johnson & Wales slips to 1-5 overall.

First-years Catherine Gilman (Cohasset, Mass.) and Ashley Tango (Reading, Mass.) also scored, while Holmes and sophomore Victoria Spofford (Merrimac, Mass.) each contributed an assist for the Beavers. Senior goalkeeper Kayla Costa (Watertown, Mass.) made one save in combining with first-year Hayley Silva (Newtown Square, Pa.) on the team's fifth shutout of the year.

The Green and White wasted little time getting on the board as Holmes slid a pass across the goal mouth for Towers, who knocked it home at the back post for a 1-0 lead just 1:14 into the contest. The Beavers extended their lead just over six minutes later as Tango weaved her way through the Wildcats defense and ripped a shot that deflected off the inside of the left post and in for a 2-0 edge at the 6:33 mark.

Towers made it a three-goal game with her second tally of the day off a feed from Spofford just under four minutes into the second half, and Gilman followed with her fifth strike of the season, chipping a shot over Johnson & Wales sophomore goalkeeper Shannon Yoder (Boyertown, Pa.), to push the margin to four at the 42:47 mark. Holmes then recorded back-to-back goals just 2:14 apart to give Babson a 6-0 edge with a little over 20 minutes remaining.

Johnson & Wales had its best scoring chance of the game just prior to Tango's marker after earning its lone penalty corner of the stanza. Costa made a pad save on first-year Amanda Takach's (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) shot from point-blank range, before sophomore Jessica Kocur (Mattapoisett, Mass.) lifted her shot off the rebound only to have clank off the crossbar and out of danger.

Yoder finished with 11 saves for the Wildcats, who were outshot 23-3 on the day. The Green and White also enjoyed a 16-2 edge in penalty corners.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday as Babson travels to Eastern Connecticut State for a 4 p.m. start, while Johnson & Wales hosts WPI at 7 p.m.
