Field Hockey Runs Away From Clark, 5-0, In NEWMAC Opener

WORCESTER, Mass.—Junior Victoria Spofford (Merrimac, Mass.) scored twice and senior Elizabeth Holmes (Southborough, Mass.) added a goal and two assists as visiting Babson College defeated Clark University, 5-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action on Saturday afternoon at Granger Field.

Babson, which has won 10 of its last 11 games going back to last year, is now 6-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while Clark drops to 2-4 and 0-1 in the NEWMAC.

Junior Staci Swallow (South Portland, Maine) added a goal and an assist, and sophomore Elise Towers (Cicero, N.Y.) scored once for the Beavers. Senior Kayla Costa (Watertown, N.Y.) was forced to make just one save in 62:53 of action before giving way to first-year Hayley Silva (Newtown Square, Pa.), who did not face a shot over the final seven minutes of her collegiate debut.

Spofford opened the scoring with her third goal of the season at the 8:05 mark following a penalty corner to give the Green and White a 1-0 lead. Towers then converted a feed from Swallow with 5:10 remaining in the stanza to give Babson a 2-0 lead at the half.

The Beavers put the game out of reach with three goals in the span of 12 minutes early in the second half. Spofford notched her second marker of the day off a pass from Holmes in the 41st minute, and Holmes followed with her fifth goal of the year at the 47:10 mark to make it 4-0. Swallow capped the scoring with her first tally of the year just over four minutes later, converting Holmes' team-leading sixth assist of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Christine Tinsman (Prairie Village, Kan.) finished with 15 saves on the afternoon for the Cougars.

The Green and White finished with a 23-1 edge in shots and attempted 15 of the game's 16 penalty corners.

Babson returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Johnson & Wales at 1 p.m., while Clark travels to Anna Maria on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. start.

GAME NOTES
• The Beavers have now won five consecutive NEWMAC openers.
• Babson has won 12 straight matches against Clark going back to 2004 to even the all-time series at 15-15-2.
• The Green and White is off to its first 6-0 start since 2003.
• Holmes, who is currently fourth in the NEWMAC in scoring, has recorded three or more points in four of the last five contests.
• Babson has been ahead at halftime in every game this season and is 17-1 when leading at the break going back to 9/21/13.
