Box Score WALTHAM, Mass.—Jake Picard (Suffield, Conn.) headed home a free kick from Josh Ocel (North Attleboro, Mass.) in the 108th minute as No. 7 NSCAA/No. 18 D3soccer.com Brandeis University edged visiting Babson College, 1-0, in double overtime on Saturday night at Gordon Field.
With the win, Brandeis is now 5-1-0 on the year, while Babson, which had its three-game losing streak snapped, falls to 3-2-0. The victory was also the 500th in the career of longtime Judges head coach Mike Coven.
The teams combined to put just two shots on target in a fast-paced and physical first half, but Beavers' senior goalkeeper Stephen Donato (Morganville, N.J.) was forced to make seven second-half saves, six of which came in the first 16 minutes of the stanza. He denied a trio of Brandeis attempts around a corner kick to keep the game scoreless in the 61st minute.
One of Babson's best opportunities to get on the board came midway through the first overtime, but sophomore Justin Kaplan (Medway, Mass.) was unable to finish a bouncing cross, sending his shot from inside the penalty spot over the crossbar.
Donato finished with nine saves, one short of his career high, while Judges' senior Kenn Fryer (Wilmington, Mass.) made one stop to post his second clean sheet of the season.
Brandeis finished with a 21-11 edge in shots and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. The teams combined for 35 fouls in the match.
Both teams return to action on Wednesday as Babson hosts Fitchburg State at 4 p.m., while the Judges take on WPI at 7 p.m.
