Box Score CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Junior Adam Villari (Landsdale, Pa.) scored in the 37th minute and senior goalkeeper Stephen Donato (Morganville, N.J.) made six saves as third-seeded Babson College defeated second-seeded Wheaton College, 1-0, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer tournament semifinal match at Jack Barry Field on Saturday afternoon.
With its fourth straight win, Babson (11-6-2) returns to the conference title game for the second year in a row and for the eighth time in the last 10 seasons. Wheaton concludes its season at 11-8-0.
Villari collected a feed from senior Tyler Carlos (Prospect, Conn.) and buried a 10-yard strike from the right side box inside the far post for his first career goal at the 36:33 mark. The goal was all the Beavers would need as they posted their fourth consecutive shutout.
Donato turned away a pair of shots in the first half and then made three of his four second-half saves over the final 15 minutes to preserve the victory. He denied a pair of attempts sophomore Louis Chavez (Porterville, Calif.), once the 75th minute and again in the 78th minute, and made his final stop on senior Noah Kossoff (New York, N.Y.) in the 84th minute.
Babson, which held a 13-6 edge in second-half shots, had a pair of chances to extend its lead in the closing minutes, but first-year Jackson Greenspan (Meriden, N.H.) saw his attempt deflect off the crossbar in the 81st minute, while sophomore Ian Cicalis (East Falmouth, Mass.) was denied by Lyons' sophomore goalkeeper James Bailey (Groton, Mass.) in the 87th minute.
Bailey finished with seven saves for Wheaton, six of which came after halftime.
The Green and White held a slim 19-18 edge in shots and attempted four of the game's five corner kicks.
Babson will now face top-seeded MIT at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Steinbrenner Field with a chance to repeat as NEWMAC Tournament champions for the first time since 2010.
