Box Score PINE VALLEY, N.Y.—Senior Jarryd ten Vaanholt (West Vancouver, British Columbia) scored a pair of goals, including the go-ahead tally at 4:18 of the third period, to help Elmira College defeat third-ranked Babson College, 5-3, in non-conference men's ice hockey action on Sunday afternoon at the Murray Athletic Center.
Babson, which suffered its first loss in the month of November since 2012, is now 7-1-1 on the year, while Elmira, which now has three wins over ranked opponents this season, moves to 4-4-0.
Junior Bill Seligman (Toronto, Ontario) and first-years Tommy Munichiello (Weymouth, Mass.) and Stevie DeForge (Norwood, Mass.), who was making his collegiate debut, all scored once for the Beavers. Junior Tim Searles (Chesapeake, Va.) and sophomores Jake Donahue (Groveland, Mass.) and Paul Wagner (Walpole, Mass.) each contributed an assist.
Sophomore Jeremy Marginsky (Auburn, N.Y.) put the Soaring Eagles on top just 1:12 into the first period, but Munichiello answered with his fourth goal of the season 93 seconds later to make it 1-1 less than three minutes into the contest. Elmira went back ahead 2-1 on senior Brian Depp's (Fenton, Mich.) goal at 16:50 of the opening stanza, but the Green and White tied it 2-2 on Seligman's goal just 36 seconds into the second period.
ten Vaanholt scored on the power play following a Babson hooking penalty to make it 3-2 at 2:11 of the second period. The Beavers outshot the Soaring Eagles 20-8 in the middle frame and pulled even for the third time on DeForge's tally at the 15:48 mark.
ten Vaanholt struck again to give Elmira its fourth one-goal lead of the game early in the third period. The Green and White went on the power play at the 6:14 mark, but the Soaring Eagles defense blocked four shots and first-year goaltender Sandro Aeschlimann (Zaziwil, Switzerland) made three saves to maintain their advantage. The Beavers killed off a late slashing penalty, but the hosts tacked on an empty net tally with 1:51 remaining for the final margin.
Senior Jamie Murray (Scituate, Mass.) stopped 21 shots for Babson, while Aeschlimann made 38 saves for Elmira.
The Beavers, who went 0-for-4 on the power play, finished with a 41-26 edge in shots. The Soaring Eagles went 1-for-5 on the power play.
Babson returns to action on Friday when it hosts Saint Michael's at 7 p.m., while Elmira will wrap up its five-game homestand against Potsdam on December 8.
GAME NOTES
• The Beavers are now 4-5-0 all-time against Elmira in a series that goes back to the 1977-78 season.
• Sunday's loss snapped the Beavers' 25-game unbeaten streak in the month of November.
• Sunday's game marked the first time this season that Babson did not score the first goal of the game.
