Box Score RUTLAND, Vt.—Junior Dan Casey (Chatham, N.J.) scored 4:15 into the second period and senior Jamie Murray (Scituate, Mass.) matched his season high with 32 saves to help No. 6 D3hockey.com/No. 8 USCHO.com Babson College edge Castleton University, 1-0, in New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) action on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Arena.
With the victory, Babson is now 4-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in conference play, while Castleton slips to 0-4-1 overall and 0-3-1 in NEHC play.
The Spartans outshot the Beavers 14-11 in the opening period, but the game remained scoreless thanks to the work of Murray and his counterpart, sophomore Ryan Mulder (Ottawa, Ontario). Mulder denied a slap shot by Babson sophomore Matt McMorrow (Pearl River, N.Y.) and then got some help when his rebound deflected off the post and out of danger just under 13 minutes into the stanza.
The Green and White broke through early in the second period as Casey converted a feed from junior Tim Searles (Chesapeake, Va.) on two-on-one opportunity to take a 1-0 lead. Castleton earned a five-minute power play midway through the second period, but Murray made four saves and the Beavers stayed in front when sophomore Jimmy Burns (Middletown, N.J.) hit the post at 13:47.
Babson was unable to add an insurance goal on a five-minute power play of its own early in the third period, and then was forced to kill off a pair of Spartans' power plays, including 28 seconds of a 5-on-3, over the final 10 minutes. Murray made two of his eight third-period stops over the final four minutes, and the Green and White blocked three shots, two by senior Jared Wiedemann (Pembroke, Mass.), in the closing seconds to preserve the win.
Mulder made 15 of his 31 saves in the third period to keep Castleton within striking distance.
Both teams finished with 32 shots and combined to go 0-for-9 on the power play.
Babson and Castleton both return to action on Friday at 7 p.m. as the Beavers travel to Southern Maine, while the Spartans visit Saint Michael's.

• The Beavers are 12-5-3 all-time against Castleton.
• Babson has is now 13-for-13 on the penalty kill this season and has allowed just two power play goals over its last eight games going back to last year.
• The Green and White has posted back-to-back shutouts to open league play for the second season in a row.
