Field Hockey Tops WPI, 3-0, For 11th Straight Win

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass.—Senior Elizabeth Holmes (Southborough, Mass.) finished with a goal and an assist as 16th-ranked Babson College defeated WPI, 3-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) field hockey action on Saturday afternoon.

Babson, which owns the nation's second-longest winning streak, is now 11-0 overall and 3-0 in conference play, while WPI drops to 3-6 overall and 0-3 in the NEWMAC.

Juniors Victoria Spofford (Merrimac, Mass.) and Kelsi McDougle (Hopedale, Mass.) each scored once, while first-years Ashley Tango (Reading, Mass.) and Catherine Gilman (Cohasset, Mass.) both finished with an assist. Senior goalkeeper Kayla Costa (Watertown, Mass.) made three saves to post her sixth shutout of the year.

The Green and White took a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest when Spofford tipped in a shot by Holmes. Following a stick stop later in the half, Tango struck the ball twice before sending it to McDougle, who made it 2-0 at the 26:19 mark with her third marker of the year.

Costa helped Babson maintain its two-goal lead with back-to-back saves on junior Allie Buckley (Worcester, Mass.) and senior Caroline Mazzola (Harvard, Mass.) in the 53rd minute. Holmes then notched her league-leading 13th goal of the year off a feed from Gilman with 11:16 remaining for the final margin.

Engineers' senior goalkeeper Lauren Puishys (Oxford, Mass.) finished with nine saves.

The Beavers held a 22-5 edge in shots and had a 7-6 advantage in penalty corners.

Both teams return to action on Tuesday as Babson hosts nationally-ranked Wellesley at 6 p.m., while WPI takes on Clark at 7 p.m.
