No. 9 Field Hockey Upset By Bates, 1-0

Box Score

LEWISTON, Maine—Senior Shannon Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) scored at the 8:02 mark of the first half as Bates College defeated previously unbeaten and ninth-ranked Babson College, 1-0, in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday afternoon.

Babson, which entered the game with the nation's second-longest winning streak, is now 13-1 overall, while Bates moves to 6-4 on the year.

The Beavers finished with an 8-3 edge in shots and a 7-1 advantage in penalty corners, but were unable to break through to tie the game after Beaton's early goal. Sophomore Victoria Spofford (Merrimac, Mass.) missed wide in the 13th minute and Bobcats senior goalkeeper Cristina Vega (Needham, Mass.) made her only save of the first half on first-year Ashley Tango (Reading, Mass.) in the 21st minute.

The Green and White dominated possession for much of the second half, and seemed primed to get on the scoreboard early in the stanza. Vega came off her line to make a kick save on sophomore Elise Towers (Cicero, N.Y.) at the 37:13 mark, and Bates sophomore Delaney Nalen (Greenwood Village, Colo.) came up with a defensive save on a shot by Tango following a penalty corner in the 39th minute.

Vega made her final save on a blast by Tango at the 53:12 mark, as neither team could muster a shot on goal over the final 16 minutes of the match.

Babson senior goalkeeper Kayla Costa (Watertown, Mass.) finished with one save, while Vega turned away three shots for the Bobcats.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as the Beavers travel to Mount Holyoke at 2 p.m., while Bates hosts Tufts at 12 p.m.
