Box Score Lord Jeffs Snap Beavers' 12-Game Unbeaten Streak
AMHERST, Mass.—First-year Thomas Lindstrom (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) scored at 6:02 of the second period and junior goaltender Dave Cunningham (Arlington, Mass.) stopped 44 shots as 14th-ranked Amherst College defeated No. 3 D3hockey.com/No. 4 USCHO.com Babson College, 1-0, in non-conference men's ice hockey action on Tuesday night at Orr Rink.
Amherst, which is unbeaten in its last three games, is now 7-2-2 overall. Babson, which entered the night with a 12-game unbeaten streak, drops to 11-1-1 on the year.
The Beavers outshot the Lord Jeffs 16-12 in the first period, but Cunningham came up with seven saves over the final five minutes of the opening stanza to keep the game deadlocked at 0-0 going to the first intermission.
Babson junior netminder Jamie Murray (Scituate, Mass.) made five stops early in the second period before Lindstrom struck for the game's only goal, knocking home the rebound of a shot by junior Brendan Burke (Westwood, Mass.) for his first collegiate goal. Murray made one save and the Green and White blocked another shot to kill off a hooking penalty at the 9:21 mark, while Amherst held the Beavers to just one shot on net over the final 1:12 of the second period and the first 48 seconds of the third to maintain its one-goal edge.
Cunningham made five of his 13 third-period stops to keep Babson off the board on its second power play of the game following a slashing penalty at 2:42 of the third period. The Lord Jeffs' defense then blocked three shots and were able to kill off an interference penalty midway through the stanza to keep their margin at one. After killing off a holding penalty with 4:27 left in the game, the Beavers pulled Murray for an extra attacker for the final 1:20, but were unable to pull even as Cunningham came up with a pair of late saves to seal the victory.
Murray was tremendous in between the pipes for the Green and White, stopping a season-high 32 shots.
Babson held a 44-33 edge in shots on goal and won 45-of-68 face-offs on the night. The Beavers finished 0-for-3 on the power play, while Amherst was 0-for-2 with a man advantage.
Both teams return to action on Friday at 7 p.m. as Babson travels to Saint Michael's College, while the Lord Jeffs host Colby College.
