Men Finish Second, Women Fourth in the GS at Whiteface

Barber, Alkier Post Runner-Up Finishes To Lead Beavers

LAKE PLACID, N.Y.—The Babson College men's and women's alpine ski teams opened the two-day Clarkson Carnival with a number of strong performances in the giant slalom on Saturday at Whiteface Mountain. Junior Sam Barber (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) came in second to help the men finish second, while first-year Tatum Alkier (Collingwood, Ontario) was the runner-up in the women's races, helping the Beavers to a fourth-place finish.

The Babson men, who finished second for the fourth time in five races, finished just over four seconds behind first-place Castleton.

Barber had two terrific runs and posted a time of 1:57.60 to edge out junior Carter Dowd (Salt Lake City, Utah), who came in third with a two-run time of 1:58.27. Senior Kevin Dachos (Northampton, Mass.) sat in 13th place after his first trip down the mountain but had the fastest second run of any skier to finish seventh with a total time of 1:58.58.

Sophomore Max Barber (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) finished 11th overall, while first-year John Boland (Waitsfield, Vt.) moved up six spots following his first run to come in 25th. Sophomore Ben Greenspan (Chappaqua, N.Y.) was 35th for the Green and White.

On the women's side, Alkier had the top first-run time and the third-best time of any skier on her second run to post a total time of 2:03.73, finishing just 0.20 seconds behind Ali Gunesch of Brown. Fellow first-year Michelle Martin (Belmont, Mass.) came in 17th overall with a time of 2:09.20, and sophomore Megan Jones (Essex, Mass.) was less than a second behind her, finishing 22nd.

First-year Alexis Kane (North Syracuse, N.Y.) placed 29th and sophomore Molly Danzig(Allendale, N.J.) was 44th overall.

The Beavers, who finished second in both the GS and the slalom last weekend, came in just behind second-place Castleton and third-place Clarkson. Brown won its fifth race of the year to push its MacConnell Division winning streak to 35 races.

Babson will return to Whiteface Mountain on Sunday at 10 a.m. to compete in the slalom.
