Box Score ONEONTA, N.Y.—Senior Justin Laurenzo (Park Ridge, N.J.) scored his first goal of the season in the 59th minute, lifting Babson College to a 1-0 victory over Western New England University in the opening game of the Mayor's Cup Tournament hosted by SUNY Oneonta on Friday afternoon.
Babson, which is currently ranked fifth in New England by the NSCAA, is now 3-0-0, while Western New England, which is ranked 10th in the region, dropped its second consecutive game to fall to 2-2-0 on the year.
Laurenzo broke a scoreless deadlock just over 13 minutes into the second half when he knocked a loose ball that had deflected off a Bears' defender inside the left post for the game's only goal. Junior goalkeeper Tanner Click (Lawrence, Kan.), who made three of his four saves over the final 13:30, and the Beavers' defense made the lead stand up to secure their first shutout of the season.
Kevin Strobel (Rockland, Mass.) made three of his four saves in the first half for Western New England.
Babson held an 11-7 edge in shots and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon.
Both teams will be back in action on Saturday as Babson will take on SUNY Oneonta in the championship game at 4 p.m., while Western New England meets RIT in the consolation game at 1 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Babson is now 13-2-1 all-time against Western New England, and each of the last six games in the series have been decided by a single goal…Click, who made his first start last Friday and posted his first career clean sheet in the win over the Bears, lowered his goals against average to 0.67…The Beavers have now started 3-0-0 in each of the last three seasons.
