Laurenzo, Carlos Send Men's Soccer Past MIT, 3-2, In Overtime

Box Score

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.—Senior Justin Laurenzo (Park Ridge, N.J.) scored his second goal of the game with 3:15 left in the second overtime as visiting Babson College defeated MIT, 3-2, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action on Saturday evening at Steinbrenner Stadium.

The victory snapped a two-game skid for Babson, which is now 7-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play. MIT, which entered the match with an eight-game unbeaten streak, drops to 4-1-4 overall and 1-1-0 in the NEWMAC.

Sophomore Caleb Long (Kingston, Mass.) also scored for the Beavers, while junior Tyler Carlos (Prospect, Conn.) had a season-high two assists and graduate student Dillon Ventura (Pittstown, N.J.) chipped in with one assist.

MIT opened the scoring at the 34:04 mark when junior Sean Bingham (Garden City, N.Y.) notched his league-leading seventh goal of the year with a shot that deflected off the post and in for a 1-0 lead. The Green and White wasted little time equalizing though, as Long converted a feed from Carlos for his second marker of the year in the 41st minute to send the sides into halftime tied at 1-1.

The Beavers, who are ranked seventh in New England by the NSCAA, took their first lead of the game in the 71st minute as Laurenzo recorded his sixth goal of the season off a feed from Ventura. This time it was the Engineers turn to answer though, as following a foul in the box, first-year Joshua Wilson (West Chester, Pa.) buried a penalty kick to tie the game at 2-2 at the 86:30 mark.

Both teams had one shot on target in the first period of extra time before Laurenzo gave Babson its first conference victory of the year in the 107th minute. After a foul, Carlos served a free kick into the box where Laurenzo beat MIT senior goalkeeper Sam Cannon (Scarsdale, N.Y.) to record his fourth game-winning goal of the year.

Beavers' junior goalkeeper Stephen Donato (Morganville, N.J.) stopped three shots to earn his third win of the year, while Cannon saved five shots for the Engineers, who held a slim 12-11 edge in shots.

Babson returns to action next Saturday when it travels to nationally-ranked Wheaton College at 1 p.m., while MIT will be at the Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
