Men's Soccer Falls To Nationally-Ranked Brandeis, 2-0

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass.—Visiting Brandeis University (No. 4 D3soccer.com/No. 5 NSCAA) got goals from juniors Jake Picard (Suffield, Conn.) and Conor Lanahan (Avon, Conn.) to remain undefeated with a 2-0 victory over Babson College in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

Brandeis, which has won 12 of its last 13 games going back to last season, is 8-0-0 on the year, while Babson, which is currently ranked seventh in New England, drops to 6-3-0 overall.

Both teams created scoring chances early as the Beavers' best scoring opportunity of the day came just over 90 seconds into the match as first-year Justin Kaplan's (Medway, Mass.) strike from 15 yards went just over the crossbar. Judges' senior Michael Soboff (Framingham, Mass.) drilled a shot that beat Babson junior goalkeeper Stephen Donato (Morganville, N.J.) but rang off the crossbar in the 22nd minute before creating space again 30 seconds later only to see his blast from the right flank go just wide.

The Brandeis pressure finally paid off as Picard notched his first marker of the year at 28:02 of the opening half. After settling an attempted clearing pass 25 yards from goal, he faked out a defender and ripped a shot inside the left post from the top of the box for a 1-0 lead.

The Green and White pressed hard for an equalizer early in the second half, earning three free kicks in its offensive third, but were only able to muster one shot on target in the opening 25 minutes of the stanza before falling behind 2-0 on Lanahan's tally in the 72nd minute. Sophomore Josh Ocel (North Attleboro, Mass.) served a corner kick toward the far post, and the junior back rose above a Babson defender and headed home his first goal of the year.

Donato kept the Beavers within striking distance with a pair of spectacular saves on Soboff and senior Tyler Savonen (Orleans, Mass.) over the final 11 minutes, but they were unable to solve a Brandeis defense that has conceded just two goal over its first eight matches.

Donato finished with five saves for the Green and White, while senior Joe Graffy (Concord, N.H.) stopped one shot to post his fifth clean sheet of the year for the Judges.

Brandeis held a 14-2 edge in shots and attempted five of the game's six corner kicks.

Babson returns to action on Saturday when it travels to MIT at 5 p.m., while Brandeis will host nationally-ranked Wheaton College on Tuesday, September 30, at 7 p.m.

MATCH NOTES: Babson is now 28-24-10 all-time against the Judges but has dropped three consecutive meetings going back to 2012…the Beavers are 1-2-0 against ranked opponents this season with both losses coming against teams currently ranked in the top five of the NSCAA poll.
