Box Score BABSON PARK, Mass.—Senior John Tarzian (Garden City, N.Y.) headed home the game-winning goal 3:34 into the second overtime period, lifting the visiting Coast Guard Academy to a 2-1 triumph over 21st-ranked Babson College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) men's soccer action at Hartwell-Rogers Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, Coast Guard is now 7-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference play, while Babson, which had its three-game winning streak snapped, drops to 6-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the NEWMAC.
The Beavers had a pair of quality scoring chances in the game's opening 15 minutes as senior Justin Laurenzo (Park Ridge, N.J.) had his shot from eight yards out saved off the goal line by Bears' first-year Austin Read (Takoma Park, Md.) at the 4:56 mark, and first-year Justin Kaplan (Medway, Mass.) got a touch on a long service into the box only to have it deflect off the post in the 15th minute.
The Green and White finally broke the scoreless deadlock at the 66:40 mark as first-year Ian Cicalis (East Falmouth, Mass.) notched his first career goal just minutes after coming on as a substitute. Classmate Logan Ventura (Pittstown, N.J.) put a long throw in into the box that bounced past junior Andrew Gonzalez (Durham, Conn.) and to Cicalis, who ripped a right-footed shot past Coast Guard senior goalkeeper Richie Burns (Long Beach, Calif.) and inside the left post for a 1-0 lead.
Babson junior goalkeeper Tanner Click (Lawrence, Kan.) made a tremendous save to preserve the lead, punching a bending shot from senior Trey Chamberlin (Stockton, N.J.) off the top of the crossbar in the 89th minute, but unfortunately could do nothing on the game-tying goal with just 43 seconds left in regulation. Read settled a long ball from Bears' junior Ricky Davies (Richardson, Texas) at the left edge of the six-yard box and sent a cross into the goal mouth that bounced off a Beaver defender and over the goal line to force overtime.
Each team had a scoring opportunity in the first overtime period as Babson junior James Rosso (Hingham, Mass.) had his header float over the crossbar in the 96th minute, while Read's attempt from 12 yards was denied by first-year Logan Ventura (Pittstown, N.J.), who was guarding the back post on a Bears corner kick in the 99th minute.
Tarzian ended the game on the first scoring chance of the second overtime, converting sophomore Jake Rath's (Kearney, Miss.) corner kick at the back post in the 104th minute to give Coast Guard its first win over the Green and White since 1995.
Click finished with four saves for Babson, while Burns stopped seven shots for the Bears.
Babson returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts fifth-ranked Brandeis University at 2:30 p.m., while Coast Guard is at crosstown rival Connecticut College on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
