Men's Soccer Stuns Third-Ranked Williams, 1-0

Box Score

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass.—Senior Justin Laurenzo (Park Ridge, N.J.) scored in the 36th minute and junior goalkeeper Tanner Click (Lawrence, Kan.) stopped three shots as visiting Babson College stunned third-ranked Williams College, 1-0, in non-conference men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Cole Field.

Babson, which has won three straight matches, is now 6-1-0 on the year, while Williams drops to 3-1-0 overall.

In a physical game that featured 26 fouls and six yellow cards, Laurenzo gave the Green and White the only goal they would need late in the first half. Sophomore Tyler Carlos (Prospect, Conn.) served a free kick from just inside midfield into the box that deflected off an Ephs' defender to Laurenzo, who took two dribbles to his right and ripped a shot inside the left post from the right edge of the six-yard box for a 1-0 advantage.

Babson's best chance to extend the lead came in the 60th minute after a foul just outside the top of the box. Carlos blasted the ensuing free kick over the wall and had it bending toward the left post before Williams' sophomore goalkeeper Christian Alcorn (Richmond, Va.) tipped it over the crossbar and out of danger.

Despite dominating possession over the game's final 20 minutes and a 21-8 edge in shots, the Ephs put only three on target and were unable to find an equalizer. Click denied a header from senior Matt Muralles (Weston, Fla.) in the 79th minute, and classmate Zach Grady (East Bridgewater, Mass.) blasted his indirect kick from just inside the 18-yard box directly into a Beavers defender in the 80th minute after Click was penalized for holding onto the ball for too long.

Click won for the fourth time in five starts and posted his second clean sheet of the year for the Green and White, while Alcorn made two saves for Williams.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson hosts the Coast Guard Academy at 1 p.m., while Williams will travel to Amherst College for a 2:30 p.m. start.

GAME NOTES: Williams leads the all-time series between the two sides, 24-10-3, but Babson has won three of the last five meetings going back to 2010…the Beavers have outscored their opponents 9-2 in the first half this season…during its current three-match winning streak, the Green and White has outscored its foes 11-0 and has not conceded a goal in 273:32...Babson is unbeaten in its last 15 games (14-0-1) when leading at halftime.
