Big Second Half Helps Men's Soccer Defeat Mount Ida, 4-0

Box Score

NEWTON, Mass.—Senior Justin Laurenzo (Park Ridge, N.J.) broke a scoreless deadlock in the 60th minute and visiting Babson College added three more goals over the final 22 minutes en route to a 4-0 win over Mount Ida College in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday night at Alumni Field.

With the victory, Babson, which is ranked ninth in New England, moves to 4-1-0, while Mount Ida, which has dropped two straight matches, falls to 2-2-0 on the year.

Junior Andrew Gonzalez (Durham, Conn.), sophomore Caleb Long (Kingston, Mass.), and first-year Christopher Doire (Mansfield, Mass.) all scored for the Beavers. Junior Tyler Carlos (Prospect, Conn.) and sophomore Shane Mandel (Syosset, N.Y.) each chipped in with an assist in the win.

The Green and White, which held a 9-2 edge in first-half shots, had the better of the scoring opportunities in the opening 45 minutes. Laurenzo had a pair of shots blocked in the 13th minute, the second of which glanced off the arm of a Mustangs defender resulting in a penalty kick. Carlos had his attempt from the penalty spot denied by a diving save from Mount Ida senior goalkeeper Mat Pils (Monroe, Conn.), and then had his header on the rebound bounce off the top of the crossbar and out of play.

The Beavers finally went in front just under 15 minutes into the second half when Laurenzo took a feed from Mandel and curled in a shot that beat Pils and deflected off the post for his second goal of the season. Doire then doubled the Babson advantage in the 69th minute with his first collegiate goal, collecting a loose ball in the box and burying a shot under the bar for a 2-0 edge.

Gonzalez added an insurance goal in the 81st minute, heading home a corner kick from Carlos for his first tally of the season, to make it 3-0, and Long capped the second-half outburst with the first goal of his career in the 89th minute to give the Green and White a 4-0 lead.

Babson junior Stephen Donato (Morganville, N.J.) made three saves in his first start of the year to post his third career shutout. Pils matched his season high with seven saves for the Mustangs.

The Beavers finished with a 26-5 edge in shots, including an 11-3 advantage in shots on target, while also attempting five of the game's six corner kicks.

Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson hosts Lesley University at 12 p.m., while Mount Ida will entertain Anna Maria College at 1 p.m.
